This Day in Aviation: June 6, 1925

In the spring of 1925, Noel Wien was tasked with finding a new airplane with an enclosed cabin for the Fairbanks Airplane Corporation. The aircraft he found was a Fokker F-3, seen in the photograph, located in New York. It featured a plush interior, carpeted floor, glass flower vases, and comfortable seating for five.

The Fokker F-3 monoplane was originally built in Amsterdam in 1921. The last of the F-3 models were powered by BMW Eagle engines. Of the thirty-one F-3s built, only four were shipped to the United States.

In the photograph, Fairbanks Mayor Dr. F. De La Vergne hands Noel a letter for personal delivery to Nome. This was the first commercial flight between the two cities. Noel took off with three passengers and his brother Ralph Wien at 10:45 p.m. on June 6, 1925.

The F-3, requiring one stop to refuel, landed on a field in Ruby Alaska, and nosed over. Unwilling to wait out the repairs, the three passengers quickly chartered a boat to Nome.

After three days of repairs, Noel and Ralph resumed their flight to Nome. The plane flew at 90 mph and arrived ahead of the three weary passengers.

An early milestone in Alaska’s aviation history that helped shape travel between communities!
