Artist statement
This image, “in which new life builds on the past,” is from my MFA thesis “The Desert Unicorn,” a photographic survey of my childhood home in New Mexico. My work focuses on memory keeping and landscapes, and I hadn’t returned to the state since my maternal grandmother’s death in 2017. Thanks to a research grant I was able to travel across the state with my 4x5 field camera documenting iconic and prosaic scenes, which were then made into a suite of archival pigment prints on Japanese washi and kitakata paper.

Eileen Claveloux

Artist statement
This is a digital collage made up of hundreds of layers, put together in Photoshop. It is somewhat seamless but skewed and distorted. The place is one of importance to me, of a place within the town my parents lived in for many years. After printing, another layer is added, a handwritten narrative about the place, family story and history, musings about the future, my children and grandchildren. The handwriting is only legible in parts but creates another layer of texture and meaning to the place depicted.

In 1970, Tiny Tim performed “The Ice Caps Are Melting” on The Ed Sullivan Show. The simple tune unexpectedly became a pivotal cultural moment, introducing broader audiences to the concept of climate change. In Meltdown, Sally Prasch draws on this reference in her own life while also pointing to contemporary researchers such as Robert DeConto, director of the School of Earth & Sustainability at UMass, whose work examines how ice sheets respond to a warming climate.

Take a full student-guided tour through Prasch’s exhibition, Fragile Connections, this Wednesday, April 8, 6 p.m. at Hampden Gallery!

Other tour dates include April 17, April 24, and May 8 at 4 p.m.

Artist statement
My work is a reflection of the war happening in Ukraine and how it affects my second home in Poland. I dream of a future where war is a thing of the past and Ukraine can become free. By depicting these horrific themes through these small moments, I am able to capture my feelings of hope that this ruthless war will end.

Gabriella Adams, A Peaceful Day in Poland, 2025. Oil paint on canvas, 30” x 48”.
