Herter Art Gallery The oldest exhibition space on campus, Herter Gallery is a significant landmark in the cultural history of the region.

It supports the teaching mission of the Department of Art, to which it belongs, by pioneering and redefining contemporary art. Herter Gallery is the oldest exhibition space on the UMass campus. Its primary purpose is to arrange for the display and study of works of art consonant with the educational mission of the university’s Art Department. It is a mission predicated on the belief that the awareness, appreciation, and understanding of works of art are essential elements of a liberal arts education. The principal aim of the Gallery’s exhibition program, is to explore and encourage experimental approaches in the presentation of contemporary visual art, particularly those approaches that reflect the Gallery’s commitment to the multi-disciplinary study of art and culture. Exhibitions presented by the Gallery’s staff will focus on a broad range of work created by both established and emerging artists, as well as regularly scheduled exhibitions by students and faculty from within the Art Department. Beyond these rather general parameters, there is a recognition by Herter Art Gallery of the expanded definition of the gallery’s role as a major cultural resource, making art, ideas, and the social context they represent, accessible to a diverse constituency. Increasingly, a growing number of disciplines within the humanities have come to recognize that the visual arts have a unique capacity to create shared experiences, with galleries becoming in the process, powerful transmitters of ideas and shapers of values in society. Exhibition facilities such as Herter, can therefore become ideal places for achieving this, by facilitating an encounter between viewer and objects that may, hopefully, correspond to some aspect of their lives, and touch them in new and unexpected ways. it is the mission of Herter Art Gallery to establish a forum betwen the humanities and sciences for the discussion of important issues in that can contribute to the intellectual life of the university, and the larger community which it serves.

Robin Mandel: Give and Take
February 5 – March 7, 2024

Opening Reception: Monday, February 5, 4 – 6 pm

From Mandel’s artist statement:

“Videos loop, motors rotate; both do the same thing over and over. My goal is to make this repetition meaningful, prying open the loop to allow a viewer to inhabit it, or twisting the loop tightly enough to create something new. These bent and twisted loops open the door to paradoxes: things that are both moving and still, there and not there, material and immaterial. I create objects and images that tell an impossible story.

In moments of conflict, confusion, or wonder, our seeing and our knowing diverge. My work operates in that cognitive gap, privileging neither knowledge nor experience, admitting instead the contradictory truths of both. To hold two opposing ideas in mind at once is a powerful act. It enables empathy; it is an antidote to intolerance; it validates doubt as an intellectual tool. To see one thing and know another – to grapple with paradox – the mind must find a way to allow for the impossible.”

Transcendent Narratives: Stories of Humanity is an exploration of the stories we tell one another through every means possible. Wielding a range of mediums—including animation, painting, and prints—the artists present narratives both suspended in time and unfolding before viewers’ eyes. Whether comedic or intense, personal or fantastical, the exhibition shepherds us on a journey to experience other worlds, times, and lives.

The artists exhibiting work are part of Art 401, a course focusing on professional art career practices. The course prepares art students for life after graduation by teaching exhibition organization, grant application, and publicization of their work. Transcendent Narratives: Stories of Humanity is an opportunity for the students in the class to put these skills into practice.

We welcome you to give ample, equal observation to each work on display in this exhibit. The works are presented in various formats, including wall hangings, televisions, projectors, and sculptures. Through this range of techniques, they all share a common thread of hunger to tell, to broadcast a story to the world.

Artists included in the exhibition: Phil Batubara, Shane Fontaine, Austin Fydenkevez, Lafayette Herard, Ian Hunt, Shea Kenny, TJ LaLonde, Jasper Merrill, Morgan Miller, Tyler Millien, Morgan O’Blenis, Isabelle Okwuosa, Isabella Paterson, Cole Senatore, Heeju Yoo, Anyi Zhao.
