Augusta Savage Gallery is closed until Friday, October 2, as we install and prepare to open The Souls of Black Folk by Desmond Beach, PhD.

Beach’s exhibition transforms the brutalities embedded in Black life into beauty, illuminating stories of resilience through intricate quilted portraits. His artworks are accompanied by cleansing rituals and performances native to African American spiritual practices.

Join us for the opening reception is this Friday, October 2, 5-7 p.m. Plus, before the exhibition opens, this Thursday, October 1 at 2:30 p.m., just us for a workshop where you can create your own memento to be placed on a community altar in the exhibition.

There are just two days left to visit Surveying Gravity: A Mirror for Growing Contradictions by Justin Randolph Thompson

Come experience this interactive exhibition — complete with a pool table, corn hole, records, and archival materials to sift through — celebrating the life and legacy of Randolph W. Bromery.

Augusta Savage Gallery is open today from 1-7 p.m., and tomorrow, September 25, from 1-2 p.m.

This is the final week to view Justin Randolph Thompson’s outstanding exhibition, Surveying Gravity, celebrating the legacy of his grandfather and former UMass chancellor Randolph W. Bromery. The exhibition is a recreation of Bromery’s basement, complete with a pool table, records, and archival photographs and documents.

Gallery hours:
Monday–Wednesday 1-5 p.m.
Thursday–Friday 1-7 p.m.

Yesterday, Justin Randolph Thompson and his brother Jason Thompson gave a site-specific performance in the courtyard of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library.

“We Watched the Clouds” featured Randolph W. Bromery’s alto saxophone alongside bass saxophone, lap steel guitar, and spoken text, reflecting on Du Bois’s vision of Black internationalism and the intertwined legacies of John C. Robinson and Randolph W. Bromery.

The event was hosted in collaborated with the W.E.B. Du Bois Center, and the performance was supported by the MAP Fund and the Creative Capital Foundation.

Tonight, Augusta Savage Gallery hosts a reception for Thompson’s exhibition, Surveying Gravity. A film screening will take place at 4 p.m., with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m.

Justin Randolph Thompson’s exhibition, Surveying Gravity: A Mirror for Growing Contradictions, opens this Friday! The exhibition explores the life and legacy of Thompson’s grandfather, former UMass Chancellor Randolph W. Bromery, through a recreation of his basement, including interactive elements such as a pool table, records, archival materials, and more.

From September 8–10, Thompson will host a series of performance art events related to the exhibition.

Performance: From Hadàn to Cumberland
September 9, 11 a.m.

Performance: We Watched the Clouds
September 9, 4 p.m.

Reception and Film Screening
September 10, film screen at 4 p.m., reception at 5 p.m.

As Justin Randolph Thompson continues to install his exhibition, “Surveying Gravity: A Mirror for Growing Contradictions,” he took a few minutes to talk about his exhibition, his research, his work to preserve his grandfather’s legacy, and the programming accompanying the show.
