Justin Randolph Thompson’s exhibition, Surveying Gravity: A Mirror for Growing Contradictions, opens this Friday! The exhibition explores the life and legacy of Thompson’s grandfather, former UMass Chancellor Randolph W. Bromery, through a recreation of his basement, including interactive elements such as a pool table, records, archival materials, and more.

From September 8–10, Thompson will host a series of performance art events related to the exhibition.

Performance: Mine Eyes
September 8, 5 p.m.

Performance: From Hadàn to Cumberland
September 9, 11 a.m.

Performance: We Watched the Clouds
September 9, 4 p.m.

Reception and Film Screening
September 10, film screen at 4 p.m., reception at 5 p.m.

As Justin Randolph Thompson continues to install his exhibition, “Surveying Gravity: A Mirror for Growing Contradictions,” he took a few minutes to talk about his exhibition, his research, his work to preserve his grandfather’s legacy, and the programming accompanying the show.

Angel Abreu’s paintings and layered multimedia works resist dominant narratives around race, agency, and representation in American literature and culture. Currently on view at the gallery, Crossing Narratives presents counternarratives to classic texts including The Scarlett Letter, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and other major works.

Come see it for yourself. Augusta Savage Gallery is open Monday–Tuesday, 1-7 p.m. and Wednesday–Friday, 1-5 p.m.

Angel Abreu is an artist, writer, and educator whose collaborative work developed through Tim Rollins and K.O.S. and Studio K.O.S., which Abreu co-founded, is held in more than 120 public collections worldwide. His practice is rooted in shared inquiry and continues through Studio K.O.S., alongside collaborator Rick Savinon .

During his residency at Augusta Savage Gallery, Abreu developed a body of work in response to James, Percival Everett’s reimagining of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, exploring how narrative voice shapes power and representation.

Alongside student works, the exhibition brings together works from K.O.S. and Studio K.O.S., as well as individual works by Abreu, including responses to texts by James Baldwin, William Shakespeare, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and bell hooks.

The result is a powerful collection of works that challenge and reframe traditional portrayals of Black figures in classic literature.

Thanks to everyone who made their way to the gallery Friday evening for the opening reception and artist talk for Crossing Narratives by Angel Abreu. We’re really excited to share this show by and his collaborators, Studio K.O.S. and Rick Savinon.
