University Museums

University Museums I welcome you to explore all that the Iowa State University, University Museums has to offer!

The origins of Iowa State University can be traced to the State Agriculture Society who petitioned the Iowa General Assembly to annually fund agriculture research. By 1858, state legislator Benjamin Gue introduced a bill proposing the establishment of an agricultural college, and on March 22, 1858 Governor Lowe signed into law a bill authorizing the State Agriculture College and Model Farm. Upon the prairie of central Iowa an educational institutional emerged. Built between 1860-64, the Farm House was the first and only structure on the new campus. By 1862 the Morrill Act (Land-grant Act) was signed and Iowa State was designated the state's land-grant institution.

In 1962, Ann and Henry Brunnier pledged to Iowa State a collection of dolls and decorative arts amassed over fifty-five years. The donation included a comprehensive European, North American and Asian decorative art collection. This was comprised of glass, ceramics, Old Russian enamels, and ivory carvings. Ann’s collection included more than 4,000 objects, filling two semi-trucks. Since this original donation, hundreds of other private patrons have donated other decorative arts collections to expand the University Museums’ permanent collections. In addition to a large encyclopedic collection of glass, fine ceramics, Russian enamels and ivory, this collection also includes furniture, jades, pottery, snuff bottles, and carved wood objects.

In preparation for the year-long celebration of University Museums 40th anniversary in 2015, it became clear early on that there also needed to be a celebration of the arts and significant artists of Iowa. When University Museums was first conceived in the early 1970s there was no acknowledged agreement that the institution would collect, or make it a point to collect, Iowa artists. As we look back today, 40 years later, we realize that University Museums’ collection of Iowa artists has become significant and, as time passed, a collection we sought to grow and develop in its breadth and wealth.
