Wethersfield Estate & Garden

Wethersfield Estate & Garden Wethersfield Garden, House, Farm, Carriage House Museum, Hiking & Riding Trails in Dutchess County, NY

Wethersfield is located in Amenia, NY and was originally the country estate of Chauncey Devereux Stillman (1907-1989). Nestled in 1000 acres of rolling hills of rural New York State, Wethersfield Estate and Garden provides visitors, visionaries, artists, and residents an opportunity to reflect on the importance of natural and classical artistic beauty as a crucial means of human expression for our

times. We identify the next generation of horticulturalists working to create and employ innovative practices in gardening with a view to strengthening responsible stewardship of land, conservation, and more. Wethersfield Estate & Garden partners with the most promising, emerging artists, including once-in-a-generation talents, as they interpret classical arts for the 21st century.

When Chauncey Stillman designed Wethersfield Estate & Garden in the 1930s, he built more than a dozen man-made ponds throughout the property. Originally engineered as natural springs to catch field runoff and irrigate the gardens and crops during droughts, these ponds are now mature, functioning aquatic ecosystems.

Because these ponds are quiet, undisturbed, and often stocked with fish, they serve as perfect "pit stops" for Ospreys. A passing Osprey can easily spot these reflective pockets of water from high above the Taconic foothills and drop in for an undisturbed meal.

Join us for an inspiring afternoon of music as we present the Shared Voices Residency Recital, a collaboration with The Denyce Graves Foundation and Wethersfield, this Sunday, June 14. Denyce Graves, Founder, will present the program.

In keeping with founder Chauncey Stillman’s enduring passion for the cultural arts, Wethersfield hosts annual artistic residencies that support emerging talent across music, visual arts, and performance. This year, we are proud to once again welcome the Denyce Graves Foundation and the extraordinary young artists of Shared Voices.

Founded by internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves, the Foundation is committed to nurturing the next generation of classical vocal artists through mentorship, access, and artistic excellence.

Shared Voices invites elite Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and conservatories to participate in a relationship that strives to create and encourage meaningful connections between consortium members – students, faculty, and administrators – that result in a greater awareness of the diversity within the classical vocal arts and culminate in a meaningful collaboration. As part of this intensive artistic residency at Wethersfield, students and young artists from top music conservatories and HBCUs have engaged in a week-long training program with industry luminaries, including immersive, day-long master classes with coaches from The Metropolitan Opera. This recital is the culminating moment of their time at Wethersfield.

With its mix of rolling hills, woodlands, and open fields found at Wethersfield, the American Woodcock has found a perfectly suitable habitat to settle in for the spring and summer.

These fascinating birds are crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk. Keep an eye out on your next trail hike – you might just catch them ‘rocking’ as they forage for earthworms with their long, sensitive bills!

While not currently endangered, woodcock populations face challenges from habitat loss. Your support helps Wethersfield maintain the vital forests and open fields these unique birds need to thrive.

Wethersfield pleased to opens its doors, once again, to the voices influencing our cultural landscape. On Sunday, August 16th, join Richard Armstrong, Director Emeritus of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, as he leads conversations with Jill and Peter Kraus on "The Courage to Collect Contemporary Art."

Many people are daunted when faced with collecting contemporary art, often wondering where to put it. Celebrated Millbrook collectors Jill and Peter Kraus overcame such hesitancy: they built a new house and barn with art in mind and added several acres on which they could commission artists to make outdoor sculptures. The result, “Kraus Haus,” has few peers anywhere in America. Perpetually inquisitive and certain of their shared taste, the Krauses have assembled a collection—-indoors and out—- that consistently puts artists’ work in the best light. Listen as they share their guiding principles on collecting in a conversation led by Richard Armstrong, a long-time admirer.
