The Alton Historical Museum, located on the lower level of the Gilman Library, has an assortment of memorabilia pertaining to the history of Alton. You will find old pictures and post cards depicting Alton from the turn of the century that show many areas the way they were along with old buildings that are no longer in existence. You can also find information on the many youth camps that were acti

ve in Alton Bay during the 1900's. Information and pictures of old boats that sailed the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee like the old steamboat Mt. We have furniture, birds, clothing and a roller used to move the old Mt. Washington onto land. Information is available for research of the many areas of Alton and the people who lived here

The Alton Historical Society will present Part 2: Continuation of our July 21st program, “In honor of the 250th Anniversary of the founding of our country” on Thursday August 6, 2026 at 7:00 pm at the Gilman Library on Main Street in the lower level. Time ran out to present all 40 Rev. War Soldiers of Alton on July 21st, so Part 2 will cover the remaining 18 soldiers not covered on July 21st. Marty Cornelissen will present a look at these remaining men, although not born in Alton but resided here before and/or after the war, that served our country as Revolutionary War Soldiers and Patriots, to include their military history, bio and life history that has been collected over the past decade through his research. These men served from; the Battle of Bunker Hill to the routing of British General Burgoyne. Marty is a member of the Alton Historical Society and NH Old Graveyard Association. All Alton Historical Society programs are open to the public and are always free of charge.

The Alton Historical Society will present its July program on Tues. July 21, 2026 at 7:00 pm at the Gilman Library on Main Street in the lower level. In honor of the 250th Anniversary of the founding of our country Marty Cornelissen will present a look at the men, although not born in Alton but resided here before and/or after the war, that served our country as Revolutionary War Soldiers and Patriots. Marty is a member of the Alton Historical Society and NH Old Graveyard Association. At present he has forty men that he will present, to include their military history, bio and life history that has been collected over the past decade through his research. These men served from; protection from Raiders out of Canada, the Battle of Bunker Hill to the routing of British General Burgoyne.
All Alton Historical Society programs are open to the public and are always free of charge.

The Alton Historical Society will present its June program on Tues. June 16, 2026 at 7:00 pm at the Gilman Library on Main Street in the lower level. From Mr. Phippen’s stone hut built on Mount Major, to the abandoned granite quarry by Gilman Pond; from “THE” Devil’s Den, to the whispers of the silent people, Alton’s hiking trails are rich with history and mystery. Bonnie Dodge will be sharing with us her stories from her many years of hiking Alton’s trails. With the many great hiking trails that Alton has to offer, there is always some history to discover and explore. All Alton Historical Society programs are open to the public and are always free of charge. Hope to see you there!

The Alton Historical Society will present its first program of the 2026 season on Tues. May 19, 2026 at 7:00 pm at the Gilman Library on Main Street in the lower level. The Alton Bay H2O Ski Club, organized in 1954 was part of the Bay’s excitement and attraction in the 1950’s, 60’s and into the 1970’s. They put on popular ski shows and gave ski lessons. Don Purdy, one of the early club members will be joining us to share his memories. Don was one of the more talented ski jumpers. The ski shows included barefoot skiing, trick skiing, spectacular jumping acts, pyramid acts and more. The club also sponsored the Miss Alton Bay Beauty Contest which debut in 1958. If you have memories of the Sunday afternoon ski shows you won’t want to miss this talk. All Alton Historical Society programs are open to the public and are always free of charge.

The NH Old Graveyard Spring Meeting is May 9th, 2026 at the Deerfield Community Church. All are welcome to attend and Free to All. We meet at 9:30 for refreshments and informal chat. Business meeting and program starts at 10:00. The presenter will be Melissa Knibbs, Her interest are cemeteries and graveyards, appreciating the beauty of the stones, carvings and epitaphs. The Deerfield Garden Club will be hosting a plant sale at the Town Hall across the street that includes a coffee truck selling snacks.
After a lunch break they visit the Old Center Cemetery on Meetinghouse Road, one of Deerfield's most storied burial grounds.
This should be a very interesting day for all, young and older.
