Three of my photographs, a table full of greeting cards, and a little courage. That’s what I brought to opening weekend of the 40th Annual Trappings of Texas at the Museum of the Big Bend.
What I hadn’t expected? Finding out I was one of the only photographers in the exhibition! Being surrounded by so many accomplished artists was a bit intimidating. But when I introduced myself, several people immediately connected my name with my work. That surprised me—and meant more than they probably realized.
During the artist demonstrations, painters and sculptors were creating on site. My table offered a different experience: a conversation about the decisions that turn a RAW image into a finished fine art photograph.
I enlarged one of my original images and put up a small sign: “How would you edit this photo?”
Then I shared two interpretations of that same image—one bright and dynamic, the other darker and moodier. We talked about what people noticed, which version they preferred, and how those choices changed the feeling of the photograph. Visitors could take home a greeting card of their favorite version. A little incentive to stop and chat never hurts. 😉
I almost talked myself out of doing the demo. Would anyone be interested while artists were painting and sculpting beside me?
They were! I had wonderful conversations with visitors, met other artists and gallerists, and heard people say they’d learned something new. None of those connections would have happened if I’d let my nerves make the decision.
This reel shares a few glimpses of the weekend: the demo area, a busy opening reception, dinner and the live auction.
It was a weekend I’m grateful to have been part of!
✨The Annual Trappings of Texas is happening now through October 31st in Alpine, Texas. Check out the works in person or view them online. I’ll leave a link in the comments.
