📸 DID YOU KNOW?

Have you ever noticed that people rarely smile in old photographs?

It wasn't because everyone was unhappy! Early photography often required people to sit still for extended periods, making it difficult to hold a natural smile.

Even after cameras improved, serious expressions remained popular because formal portraits were considered special occasions.

And contrary to popular belief, people DID smile in photographs during the 1800s — it just wasn't as common!

Next time you see an old photograph, take a closer look at those expressions!

📰 FROM THE ARCHIVES | Crime in Early Alliance

What were two women hiding beneath their skirts in 1930? 🥃

According to a February 4, 1930, newspaper article, two women attempted to conceal large jugs of wh***ey beneath their skirts in the back seat of a car in Alliance.

Their attempt was unsuccessful, and their husbands were arrested on liquor charges. The investigation even led officers to a farm southwest of Alliance, where they discovered equipment used to make liquor!

Just another unexpected story from Alliance's past!

🐴 Employee Favorite | Joan’s Pick

Meet Newberry the Horse! Joan chose Newberry as one of her favorite exhibits because of his long history with Alliance and the memories he holds for so many people who remember seeing him during childhood visits to Newberry’s.

After all these years, we think he’s earned his “retirement” here at the Knight Museum. 💙

Do you remember Newberry? We’d love to hear your memories!

The materials and styles may look a little different, but many of the things children loved to play with years ago are still familiar today.

What do you spot in this case that has a modern-day version?
And is there anything here you remember playing with?

🧡 Did You Know? Alliance was FIRST in Nebraska!

on April 5, 1921, Alliance citizens voted to adopt the Council-Manager system. Alliance was the first Nebraska city to use this form of government and remained the state's only council-manager city for more than two decades.

105 years later, Alliance still operates under that same form of government!
