Generously lent by Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City as part of Art Bridges’ Partner Loan Network.

Joseph Stella’s wondrous depictions of nature drew inspiration from his childhood memories of rural Italy. Stella immigrated to New York at eighteen, and initially focused on portraying the modern cityscape. In his forties, however, he began exploring the natural world in paintings like this one, which he based on “the elysian lyricism of the Italian spring.” Look for sparrows in the foreground, the national bird of Italy and one of Stella's favorites.

Happy Textile Tuesday! Today, AAM’s Associate Curator, Claire McRee, dives into “Printed textile” (Andrew Jackson Portrait Print) and “Furnishing fabric” (for George Washington Bicentennial). You can see these works in person in our summer exhibition “Revolution Retold.”

This is the last weekend to see “Tar Beach 2” which tells the story of Cassie, a girl who discovers she can fly. "Tar Beach" marked a watershed moment in Faith Ringgold’s career. She later published the story as her first children’s book and, in the decades that followed, increasingly centered storytelling in her work as both artist and author. Thank you to for the loan.

This vibrant triptych (three-section artwork) portrays a continuous narrative–a single scene that extends across multiple prints. These types of prints could be purchased separately and viewed as single compositions, but avid collectors often preferred displaying all sheets together. Below, in Trexler Gallery, is “List of Treasures: The Floral Road to the Capital (Kaiho ichiran, hana no miyakoji).” This scroll parodies the Tokaido Road, a popular subject for print series that depicted a journey from Tokyo to Kyoto. The condensed city stops, text vignettes, and disorienting mix of indoor and outdoor spaces creates a fast-paced rhythm similar to comic strips or “manga,” a Japanese graphic novel.
