Delwin Fiddler Jr. is a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and a world-renowned Native American performance artist. He enjoys being able to share songs, dances, and flute playing from the Lakota Native American nations. He has dedicated his life to protecting Mother Earth as an environmental activist, and tonight he shares wisdom from his personal experience in 2016 as a Water Protector at Standing Rock.

In remembrance of Camille Billops written by Berrisford Boothe.

She's Gone. Camille Billops 1933-2019. 🖤

There are times when I can't wrap my head around how blessed I've been and am in this life to find myself in the company of people instrumental in shaping history. Because I have the opportunity to collect and curate art, doors open. I enter and become friends with folks I'd thought beyond my reach.

Camille Billops and the love of her life, James Hatch opened their lives and loft and shared stories with me of characters central to African American history. BTW, these were stories that will never be printed. Lewd stories of some of the biggest names in the game. Camille was a 'pip' who knew how to make a grown man blush! She was so bold and sassy and funny and serious and concerned about others and their legacy and the history of black art in America. She was also pilloried for being that woman who abandoned her four-year-old to become the artist she knew she was meant to be.

Decades ago, they imagined collecting interviews from aging, emerging and ignored Af/Am artists. Together they invested their money and over decades of time generated ~ 20 volumes of the books, 'Artist and Influence.' That will always be their legacy of black American artists - in their own words. Camille single-handedly rescued art thrown away by some artists and art dumped after the death of other lesser-knowns. She kept them all in flat files in their loft at Bleeker and Broadway.

During my three visits, she'd take her time and one-by-one show me work by artists I didn't know existed. She had a story or an amusing anecdote for each one. She was fiercely proud of her own work. PFF bought her brilliant 1973 intaglio print, 'I Am Black, I Am Black, I Am Dangerously Black.' *You can see it in the exhibition 'An Essential Presence' at the Allentown Art Museum - now.* She and James became my/our friends. Not "besties" or other socially-mediated terms. Friends. C'mon over on Friday. Stay. Let's talk. Let's break open the Cointreau you brought! So what, if it's only 11:00 am?! You have to go? Friends.

That amazing loft space, bathed in light, with a forest of plants, a beloved cat and art,..so much art! So many books. Scores and scores of recorded interviews in their archive/vault. Now at Emory University. I learned earlier this year when I called to arrange a visit, that they had both entered early stages of dementia. I was granted special permission to go see them but, I didn't. I wasn't sure how to. I felt that it would be an infringement. She had a kind of Frida Kahlo unibrow as she aged. I think she "enhanced" it for effect. She'd enter Swann Auction House when they had a piece up for sale. She was ALWAYS bejeweled and adorned with vibrant colors in celebration of life and (I imagine) her dwindling ambulatory abilities! All heads turned. She earned respect. She clearly wasn't "loved" by everyone but, everyone knew she had earned - respect. I will miss her but how fortunate that I didn't miss her. For several, now precious hours over three visits, her world, their world was my world - by invitation. Camille Billops, 1933-2019. She's gone. But, before she went, she/they called my name, and looked into my eyes and showed me the grace earned from their tenacity and their open hearts. RIP.
