ned its' doors in 1984 to meet the needs of the community which it serves. In 1999, a new 15,000 square foot Studio Annex building opened it's doors to meet the changing, additional needs of the Center. Both buildings occupy a one block square lot in Downtown Alexandria's Cultural District and are connected by a unique columned walk-way. The Studio Annex Building houses 25 studios, 3 galleries, an on-site Arts Academy, a full scale ceramics studio (four kilns), and rental space. The 8,000 square foot Bolton Home houses administrative offices, 7 studios and a gallery gift shop, featuring works of art from over 200 artists. For over 30 years, it has been River Oaks Square Arts Center's (ROSAC) mission to promote contemporary visual art and fine crafts, to stimulate interest in, exhibition of, education of and appreciation for regional, resident, and local artists and their work. Currently, there are over 40 artists in residence (occupying studio space); an on-site arts academy provides continuous classes for adults and youth; presentation of twenty four exhibits are featured annually; outreach events are conducted for rural parishes/minority schools; collaborative efforts are ongoing with special needs organizations; and unique projects for youth stimulate knowledge and appreciation of fine arts and crafts.

Nurturing Tomorrow’s Leaders: The Transformative Journey at River Oaks Summer Arts Studio

As River Oaks Summer Arts Studio (SAS) celebrates another season, it’s clear that the program is much more than just an arts camp. It's a breeding ground for leadership and tradition, where young campers return as counselors, instilling the program with the creativity and traditions they once embraced. This year, as the studio marks its 30th anniversary, it continues to foster a cycle of mentorship and growth that enriches both the campers and the counselors.

"Every summer, we witness the remarkable transformation of our campers into leaders,” says Rachael Dauzat, Executive Director at River Oaks. “They come to us as young creatives, eager to explore the arts, and many return as counselors, ready to guide the next generation. It’s a testament to the strength of our community and the impact of our programs that nurture leadership qualities from such a tender age."

Jenevieve Bolen, a senior staff member and a former camper herself, reflects on her evolution at the camp: “Transitioning from camper to counselor here at River Oaks has taught me invaluable lessons in patience, organization, and collaboration. These skills are shaping my future endeavors, proving that the arts extend far beyond the canvas—they mold character.”

Jenevieve embodies a special legacy at River Oaks, where her deep-rooted connection to the Summer Arts Studio is both personal and profound. As the daughter of Aubrey Bolen, the Camp Director, she carries the unique distinction and pride of continuing her dad’s commitment to fostering creativity and leadership within the community. Her journey from camper to senior staff member at the camp highlights a beautiful continuity and her dedication to pass on the rich traditions and values instilled in her from a young age by her father and the vibrant River Oaks community. Jenevieve is on a path to continue her educational pursuits at Loyola University New Orleans, diving deeper into her passion for Musical Theater Performance as a sophomore in the honors college.

“SAS didn’t just enhance my skills in photography and social media; it also honed my problem-solving and leadership abilities,” adds Gibson Russell, another seasoned counselor. “Each challenge at camp pushed me to think creatively, much like I do in my own business today. The friendships and connections I've made here have only enriched this journey, making every summer unforgettable.” This fall, he is excited to embark on a new academic journey at the University of Mississippi, where he will pursue a degree in Southern Studies with a minor in Business, aiming to blend his creative and entrepreneurial spirits.

Ava LaCour, a long-standing counselor at River Oaks Summer Arts Studio, has grown from a high school student to an early college student while working at the camp. Her experience has been transformative, teaching her valuable lessons about responsibility, patience, and the power of listening to others' stories. "Working at this camp has allowed me to be a small part of these kids' lives, seeing them grow through both joyful and challenging times," says Ava. She values the deep connections made with fellow counselors and campers alike, which have shaped her into a confident, empathetic individual ready to pursue a career in law. As she prepares to continue her education in finance pre-law at Louisiana Tech University, Ava carries forward the lessons and joys from her summers at River Oaks.

By nurturing these young individuals, River Oaks contributes to their personal growth and ensures the community's rich artistic traditions continue to flourish. Through these summer sessions, the camp not only shapes skilled artists but also molds community leaders, underscoring the profound impact of arts education on youth development.

As SAS continues to inspire and train future generations, River Oaks remains committed to being a cornerstone of artistic and leadership development in Central Louisiana. The enduring success of SAS is a clear indicator of the vibrant and supportive arts environment that River Oaks has cultivated over the decades.

If you’re wondering what the young campers have been up to this summer, mark your calendars for August 17 from 4-5pm, when a very special Summer Arts Studio Student Show will be on display in both the Bolton-Davis and the Stokes-Harris Gallery at River Oaks.

For more information on Summer Arts Studio and other upcoming exhibitions, call River Oaks at (318) 473-2670, visit RiverOaksArtsCenter.com or find us on Facebook and Instagram at River Oaks Arts Center.

Saturday Spotlight ✨

Aubrey Bolen is the Creative Director here at River Oaks. When he is not coordinating shows and installs he also serves as the Summer Arts Studio Camp Director. Aubrey works year round to make this camp come to life and has kept SAS on the list of premier summer camps here in CenLa for several years!

Amongst many other hats he wears, at his core he is an artist. Pulling inspiration from our local Kisatche National Forest, Aubrey conveys a sense of calmness and stillness one only achieves by “sauntering.”

Come check out his work, among many others, today in the gift shop from 10-2!

River Oaks Celebrates Artistic Diversity with Resident Artist Summer Show and Commemorates Summer Arts Studio’s 30th Anniversary

This summer, River Oaks Square Arts Center is bustling with creative energy as it hosts the Annual Resident Artists Summer Show in the Bolton-Davis Gallery, showcasing a vibrant array of works from its talented resident artists. Concurrently, Rhonda Reap-Curiel's "Quite Naturally" will be in the Galerie des Amis, and Joy McDonald presents "A McJoyful Experience" in the Stokes-Harris Gallery, each bringing unique artistic narratives to the forefront.

“Celebrating 40 years of creative excellence at River Oaks is a monumental milestone. This year’s summer shows not only highlight the remarkable talents of our resident artists but also underscore our commitment to fostering a dynamic and inclusive arts community,” Says Rachael Dauzat, Executive Director at River Oaks. “Each piece tells a story of individuality and passion, resonating with our theme of celebrating four decades of creativity.”

The Resident Artists Summer Show is a cornerstone event, with each artist required to contribute one piece that creatively incorporates the number '40', symbolizing the art center's 40 years of nurturing creativity. This theme offers both a challenge and a celebration of the center’s enduring legacy and promises a fascinating exploration of thematic creativity, where each artwork invites viewers to search for the nuanced expressions of '40', enhancing the interactive experience of the exhibition.

Rhonda Reap-Curiel’s exhibition, "Quite Naturally," offers a profound visual exploration of nature’s drama. Her works encourage viewers to pause and appreciate the quieter moments of beauty that surround us, effectively capturing fleeting natural wonders through her art and artistic interpretations.

Joy McDonald’s "A McJoyful Experience" infuses the gallery with bursts of color and whimsy. Her series of reimagined famous paintings using her signature LOL characters not only entertains but sparks joy and laughter, aligning with her artistic mission to brighten lives through vibrant, humorous art.

As River Oaks gears up for the 30th anniversary of Summer Arts Studio, the region's longest standing visual arts summer program continues to be a pillar of arts education in Central Louisiana. Celebrating three decades of inspiring young creatives, the studio has cultivated a long history of artistic talent, with many former campers returning as instructors or professional artists. Summer Arts Studio’s impact in the community is invaluable, fostering generations of artists and reinforcing the importance of arts on young minds. While all four sessions have been sold out for weeks, those interested can view the students’ artwork at the Summer Arts Studio Show in August.

The season at River Oaks is ripe with celebration and artistic expression, from honoring decades of artistic contributions to fostering the next generation of creativity through its educational programs. This blend of exhibitions and celebrations not only underscores River Oaks’ pivotal role in the regional arts scene but also the commitment to nurturing an enduring love for the arts across all ages and backgrounds.

“After many years in the field of graphic design, I discovered that I enjoy the tactile aspect of pottery as opposed to the two dimensional aspect of graphic design. My favorite aspect of using clay as a medium is the ability to create with my hands instead of a computer. My goal with my pottery is to inspire one to reflect on handmade objects and the potential of those objects to communicate the juxtaposition of formal versus informal design.”

“My style of pottery is fairly simple as I don’t typically do a lot of decoration or ornate designs. What I do love though is making things that fit together — be it a French butter crock or a sugar bowl with a lid, etc. — so how could I translate that into a cup or mug? Well, voila! This is my 4-piece mug and saucer with a tea infuser and lid that doubles as a holder to catch any drips.”

“I make useful ceramic vessels that are designed for aesthetic pleasure as well as utility. I see the items that I make as being useful ‘jewels’ - shiny, small in stature, and made with as much care as possible. I love beauty and elegance as much as quirkiness and playfulness, and my vessels seek to allow the user to share my passions. Decoration versus content, beauty versus pragmatism; these are the dialectics that inform my work.”

Our Story

In 1979, the Bolton Family donated their family home to the City of Alexandria in an agreement it would be used solely for the arts. The Bolton Home was the catalyst for River Oaks Square Arts Center. Circa 1899, the house is exemplary of Queen Anne Revival Architect in Louisiana and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. After years of renovation to the Bolton Home, River Oaks opened its' doors in 1984 to meet the needs of the community which it serves. Currently, there are over 40 artists in residence (occupying studio space); an on-site arts academy provides continuous classes for adults and youth; presentation of twenty exhibitions are featured annually; outreach events are conducted for rural parishes/minority schools; collaborative efforts are ongoing with special needs organizations; and unique projects for youth stimulate knowledge and appreciation of fine arts and crafts.
