In 2009, the Campbell County Historical Society instituted a scholarship program to honor the legacy of Dr. Frank Steely at Northern Kentucky University and to develop an interest in local history among our young people. This Thursday we celebrate the this year's winners and invite them to read their winning essays at our May meeting. We encourage family, friends, teachers and classmates to come to the meeting to congratulate and support these students.

An interesting program from the folks at the Harriet Beecher Stowe House. Trust & Teamwork on the Underground Railroad Lecture
Sunday, March 22nd, 2026 at 4pm
First Unitarian Church of Cincinnati
536 Linton Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219
March 22nd Tickets
Author and journalist Ann Hagedorn explores myths and truths about the daring women and men, Black and white, who worked throughout Ohio. Since the publication of Beyond the River, Hagedorn has given numerous lectures nationwide based on its themes, spreading the word about the importance of Ohio in the abolitionists’ crusade to end slavery.

She will share some lessons learned through the years of exploring the underground railroad, and she may reveal some details about her next book, which will focus on the moral brilliance of the female abolitionists.

About the speaker: Ann Hagedorn is a former staff writer for The Wall Street Journal and an award-winning author of six narrative nonfiction books that embrace a broad range of topics and have been widely reviewed. The Wall Street Journal described her most recent book, Sleeper Agent, as "A historical page-turner of the highest order."

Hagedorn was a history major at Denison University and holds master’s degrees from the University of Michigan and Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, plus an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Denison. She has recently been elected into the Society of American Historians “in recognition of the narrative power and scholarly distinction of her historical work.”

Her quest as a nonfiction writer is to use the literary techniques of storytelling to deliver deeply-researched topics of significance to the general reader – especially to reveal remarkable people and events that fell into an abyss of obscurity. After living in New York City for two decades, she now writes her books in a small town on the Ohio River, which she discovered while researching her third book, Beyond the River: The Untold Story of the Heroes of the Underground Railroad.

A lineage society might hold the key to unlocking some of your family history. Whether you are looking to overcome roadblocks or just connect with others with ancestors that share a same homeland or experiences from a major event, one of the hundreds of lineage societies could be just the connection for you. Our Historical Society's Jan Lester will tell us about the in and outs of these groups and show you how to find one that might work for you. Our meetings are free and open to the public.

On Feb. 2, our CCH&GS Board of Directors hosted the St. Mary's 6th grade Robotics team. The team shared their Innovation Project with us since this year's competition theme is "Archaeology" and their project involved transporting and protecting artifacts. This team won the district competition and will compete at the state level on Feb. 28. To celebrate their achievement, we began with a pizza party, after which they presented their project. The evening was fun and educational for both our board members and the Robotics Team!
