Alburtis - Lockridge Historical Society

Alburtis - Lockridge Historical Society ALHS was formed in 1976 by a small group of individuals to preserve the local history. The mission of the Alburtis Lockridge Historical Society is to collect, preserve and exhibit photographs, artifacts and documents for displays and research of Alburtis
(6)

The borough of Alburtis was incorporated in 1913 by the joining of two boroughs, Alburtis & Lock Ridge. The Alburtis-Lock Ridge Historical Society began in 1976, the year of our country's bicentennial. We are a group to preserve the history of the villages of Alburtis and Lock Ridge. The Society calls home the former Lock Ridge Presbyterian Church. Museum possessions include the church's cornerstone, keepsakes from businesses and former businesses and many old photographs, including nearly 100 from 1906. Tours are available by appointment only. We are a small group of only about 12 individuals. We are always looking to increase our membership to expand our membership rolls & revitalize the organization.

50 years ago, on May 4th, the National Canal Museum opened its doors for the first time. Today, we acknowledge 50 years of open doors and remember the life of Lance E. Metz, who we can attribute much of the success and growth of those 50 years to.
_
With great sorrow, we report that Metz passed away this weekend due to complications with COVID-19 and remember this historian, dear friend and great supporter.
_
You can read more about Metz' great impact on the National Canal Museum history blog: https://canals.org/2020/05/04/remembering-lance-e-metz-on-our-50th-anniversary/

Got to watch this. Pretty cool...

What is the difference between iron and steel? In this virtual lecture, guests will learn the basics of each material, then dive deeper to discover specific types of iron and steel, how production evolved over time, and what products they can be found in.

This lecture is presented by NMIH Historian Mike Piersa. Mike graduated with a bachelor’s in history from Moravian College and a master’s in history from Lehigh University. He has been with NMIH for over 17 years and has been instrumental in the research and interpretation behind the museum’s collections as well as the restoration of historical industrial equipment both at the museum and at outside facilities. His quarry machinery preservation work resulted in him becoming an MSHA Certified Miner and taking leading roles in important restoration and preservation projects across the country, including the Bangor Quarry Hoist Project, a collaboration between the Totts Gap Arts Institute, the American Industrial Mining Company Museum, and the Borough of Bangor, PA. Mike has presented across the country on his work with industrial heritage and in 2019 published The Big Green Machine, a short book detailing the history, preservation, and operational restoration of NMIH’s 115-ton stationary steam engine.

The D&L Trail has seen a 174% average increase in trail use compared to this time last year. Amidst #socialdistancing orders, people can still get out on the trail. To help educate trail users, we're rolling out new signage with the help of Blue Mountain! Here's a first look:

Here are more photos from our wonderful bus trip to Berks County yesterday. Forty-seven of us spent the day hunting barn stars (also called hex signs) with Patrick J. Donmoyer of The Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center at Kutztown University and barn star artists Eric Claypoole and Andrew Shirk. The trip was connected with Glencairn’s current exhibition, “Hex Signs: Sacred and Celestial Symbolism in Pennsylvania Dutch Barn Stars.” You can see some original barn stars “up close and personal” at Glencairn’s exhibition, which lasts until November 3rd. http://ow.ly/7JfF30nAwBu

We are thinking of an awesome fundraiser for next year. Anyone up for a faushtnacht sale in February? They would be through Mary Ann Donut Kitchen in Allentown. Three different types; plain, powered and granular sugared. Sold by the dozen at $12.00 a dozen, tentatively. Sales would start in January and end two weeks prior to February 25th. Pick up would be the Saturday before the 25th. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks
