Go Brits!!

The Five Days In 1970 Oral History Project rolls along with EMU Historic Preservation Program graduate student Akaiia Ridley interviewing EMU alum Rob Musial about the student unrest of the late 60s and early 70s. Student activist Musial was editor of the Eastern Echo during some of the most turbulent times in EMU history. He gave Akaiia an invaluable first hand account of what he saw and what it meant to our university in the lead up to a massive student uprising at EMU following the shootings at Kent State. Part of Matt Jones’ Oral History Techniques course, 17 students interview 17 participants ranging from students, administrators and faculty who risked their futures to uphold their ideals, to law enforcement officers (yes, we got Sheriff Doug Harvey) and community members swept up in the profound cultural shifts of the era. Akaiia is such a gift to this program, having already begun to mold the institutional memory of Albion College with her oral history-based project, The Beginning of Belonging. Please check out that project in the comments.

On this day in the Albion College Pleiad....October 21, 1960, the Pleiad reported on then Presidential candidate John F. Kennedy stopping in Albion on the campaign trail. According to the headline, JFK was greeted by jeers and cheers, with many students showing up to show their support for his opponent.

Find more interesting stories just like this on the Albion College Archives website where there are copies of the Pleiad available from 1883-1999!

Don't forget, TOMORROW at 7pm at the Bohm Theatre is the 23rd Annual Marilyn Crandall Schleg Memorial Lecture, organized by the Albion College Archives.

Dr. David Pilgrim will present Using Objects of Intolerance to Teach Tolerance and Promote Social Justice: Lessons from the Jim Crow Museum. Dr. Pilgrim is best known as the founder and director of the Jim Crow Museum, a 20,000 piece collection of racist artifacts at Ferris State University. He is a prolific public speaker and one of this country’s leading experts on diversity, equity and race relations issues.

The lecture is free and open to the public and is definitely something you won't want to miss!

We love class visits to the Archives! This week Dr. Alli Harnish's First Year Seminar The Horror!: An Interdisciplinary Exploration of Zombies, Vampires and Other Monsters came to visit.

The class was able to learn all about what an archive is, what archivists do, and how archives can be helpful to research. They also got to check out some cool items from the collection! Surprisingly--there are rare books that relate to their class topic: Cotton Mather's Wonders of the Invisible World was written in response to the Salem Witch Trials.

We hope you can join us Thursday October 13 at 7pm at the Bohm Theatre for the 23rd Annual Marilyn Crandall Schleg Memorial Lecture, organized by the Albion College Archives and partially sponsored by Albion’s Big Read.

This presentation will introduce the audience to the mission, vision, and work of the Jim Crow Museum, the nation’s most extensive publicly accessible collection of racist objects. The presenter, the facility’s founder, also shares lessons learned about race relations and social justice. This event is free and open to the public! We hope to see you there!

Audience members should note that this is a PowerPoint presentation, and some images are disturbing. The images are included not to offend but to present an accurate depiction of the subject.

If you have questions about this event please contact the Albion College Archives!
