A great find for the Doña Ana County Clerks office!

Scott Krahling, Doña Ana County Clerk and employees of the County Clerk's office unveiled today the long sought after Pat Garrett Coroner's Report dated February 29, 1908. Recognizing the importance of preserving the county's and state's history, the County Clerk's office is just getting started on a long project to organize and preserve the "old documents" in their vault. Special guests included Susannah Garrett, granddaughter of Pat Garrett. Guest speakers were New Mexico State Historian (and ex-oficio board member of HSNM) Rick Hendricks and Arizona State University Professor Emeritus Robert "Bob" Stahl. The event was also dedicated to the memory of Cal Traylor, a local historian who pursued the story of Pat Garrett and other aspects of the county's history.

Our new exhibit is open!

We have opened a new exhibit featuring the New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (NMSBVI).
Elizabeth Garrett, blind daughter of famous sheriff Pat Garrett, renowned for having shot “Billy the Kid,” is featured prominently in the exhibit. There is a piano believed to have belonged to her, various photos of her and some of her famous friends, including Helen Keller, the famous deaf and blind woman who Elizabeth urged to come to New Mexico and speak before the State Legislature on behalf of the school.

The exhibit is sponsored by the four Alamogordo Lions Clubs. They donated a Braille writer to the exhibit. Visitors can try the writer and see what it is like typing in Braille.

Come out and see our new exhibit!

Do you know the story of Sgt. Willie Estrada? Perhaps you have stories to share. If you'd like to learn more of his sacrifice stop by the museum!

County recognizes Sgt. Willie Estrada's heroism

“I believe he meets the criteria because he could’ve jumped out of the tank and ran like the others, but he was man enough to stay behind. His tank was the only one that stayed,” Pete Estrada said. “He was instrumental in saving a lot of the Korean people and saving the crews of the other two tanks. That’s the kind of person he was.” (Video by Jacqueline Devine/Daily News)
