A popular presenter returns for an interesting talk at the Aiken County Historical Museum this Saturday, May 25, 2019, at 2 pm! “History in Headstones: Lucky In Love” is a unique look at love through the prism of the headstones of famous lovers. From Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, to June Carter Cash and Johnny Cash, to Ozzie and Harriet, to Victoria and Albert, these couples shaped themselves, their relationships, and their societies. This free event looks at the epitaphs and symbolism of the final devotion of some of the most well-known couples in history.

It is with regret that the Friends of the Museum announce the cancellation of the upcoming Anniversary Picnic at Banksia on May 4th. This event was planned as a fundraiser for the Aiken County Historical Museum. Unfortunately, there has been poor response from the FOM's membership and the general public. Thus, the Friends have not sold enough tickets to be able to move forward with their plans. They have also experienced some technical difficulties with the arrangements that have been made.

As always, the Friends of the Museum thank you for your support!

The ACHM's director Lauren Virgo had the opportunity to speak at the annual state meeting of the Palmetto Friends Gathering in Columbia on March 16th. The Friends (also known as Quakers) were interested in learning about the life and legacy of Martha Schofield.

Martha Schofield was a young Quaker woman from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, who moved to South Carolina after the Civil War to teach children of the recently freed slaves. The Schofield Normal and Industrial School was founded in 1868 and it still lives on today as Schofield Middle School in Aiken, SC. To learn more about this fascinating woman and the legacy of her students, please visit the Aiken County Historical Museum's Schofield exhibit.

This is so great! Dr. Matilda Arabella Evans' home has just been recognized with an historical marker in Columbia, SC. Dr. Evans was the first African-American female physician to practice medicine in the state and she was a graduate of the Schofield Normal and Industrial School. The school still exists today as Schofield Middle School in Aiken, SC.

Hi everyone! Just wanted to send out a little note that we have temporarily closed two exhibits - the County History room and the Archaeology room - while we renovate a third room. We apologize for the inconvenience that this may cause because, believe us, we would have avoided closing off these two important exhibits if there was any alternative. Thanks for bearing with us as we work to improve the preservation of our county's history.
