“You are doing something greater than simply supporting the museum, you are planting the seeds for our future scientists and engineers, doctors and programmers. You are the reason why children can break socioeconomic barriers. You are the reason why their minds flourish. You are the reason why they will someday do something great, be someone amazing. Thank you for being that someone.” - First Grade Teacher, 15-year beneficiary of subsidized Traveling Science Workshops and field trips

Today, Dec. 26 and tomorrow, Dec. 27, drop-in from 10am to 2pm for Everyday Engineering: Strike a Balance. Construct and create with repurposed and recycled materials. Build a tabletop seesaw using rulers, paint stirrers and paper towel tubes. Then pile on the pennies and see if they can do a balancing act. Try balancing a bird on your fingertips and make your own “balancing bird” to take home.

Academy scientists describe 71 species in 2019

There's always more to learn about our world! This year, scientists identified 71 new plant and animal species--including a fish called Cirrhilabrus WAKANDA. Two movie references in naming one little fish. Isn't science fun?! (Though the one pictured here is a cat-eyed cardinalfish.)

From geckos to goblin spiders, flowering plants, and island ants, these new species grow Earth's tree of life.
