Addressing Racial Injustice with Young Children

This particular link has been shared a lot on social media lately, but it's worth sharing again and definitely worth reading. The book, "Something Happened in Our Town": A Child's Story About Racial Injustice, was written by three family and children psychologists and follows a White family and a Black family as they discuss a police shooting of a Black man. The book includes many resources for parents and educators including child-friendly definitions, sample dialogues, and discussion guides.

Thank you to Colocation America for their generous grant in support of new STEM exhibits for the Museum. Gifts like these are especially appreciated during this time when the Museum is closed. We look forward to getting back to work creating exciting STEM experiences for children in our community.

Congratulations Discovery Museum for being a 2020 STEM Grant recipient! We are excited to explore cause and effect with you… for example, what happens when we make this announcement to the world? Hopefully, it brings more good things (and more examples for your cause and effect exhibit).

Talking to Children About Racial Bias

We recognize that so many families struggle with how to discuss racial issues with their children. Healthy Children and American Academy of Pediatrics have put together a helpful article on how we can confront our own racial bias as well as giving age appropriate advice for talking to our children.

Parents may better face today's challenges with an understanding of how racial bias works in children, as well as strategies to help them deal with and react to racial differences.

Talking About Race

Discovery Museum supports our nation's need for change and condemns racism of any kind. Children in our community feel the anger, confusion, and division in our country. How to comfort and educate them is difficult for all of us. The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture has created a web portal, "Talking About Race," to provide free educational resources and tools to help all educators, caregivers, and individuals talk about race and racism. It’s a terrific starting point in our efforts to learn, listen, and be active. https://nmaahc.si.edu/learn/talking-about-race

Today’s challenge is "Celebrate Flower Power Week!” All those April showers brought on the May flowers! We usually celebrate our own made up holiday around this time every year--Flower Power Week. What can you do to celebrate the power of flowers? Make a bouquet? Take a picture? Create a flower craft? Show us! (Check out our Discovery at Home page for how to make Hammered Flower Prints. https://bit.ly/DiscoveryMuseumatHome)

Every few days while we are closed, we’ll ask you to comment with a photo based on that day’s challenge. When we re-open, we’ll randomly pick a winner from each challenge to receive 2 passes to visit us! All challenges will remain open until the Museum re-opens, so comment on any of them at any time.

My kids miss the Discovery Museum! Today they were wishing for the big sheets of outdoor fabric for creating magical spaces between the trees. Is there a way to find out the brand or type of fabric you use? We would love to get some for backyard play during quarantine.

Thank you for your generous donation to our silent auction fundraiser and your support of Up With Books!! We appreciate you being a member of our community. 📚❤️
Fresh Start Food Gardens is counting down the days to the potato harvest in Discovery Woods. Come help us dig for potatoes in the new raised beds next Sunday at 1:00 or 1:30. Guaranteed fun for kids aged 3-103! Can't wait to see you.
WOW! Have you grown up in the years since my daughter dragged me to you back around 2000-2004. Every Saturday, we had to, unless a soccer game interfered, visit you for what usually was a 3 hour visit. I admit, I liked it too. Except for my daughter feeding me three meals at the upstairs kitchen... She is grown and in her 20's now but she sure remembers you. Thank you for all those memories.
We had such a fun time today at the Discovery Museum! The camping room was a fave!
Thank you for your generous donation to the CHAPS, Inc. fundraiser!!! We love what you bring to this area!! ❤️
Thanks to the reciprocal membership program we visited the DOseum in San Antonio, TX last week on a chilly rainy day during our vacation. It was SO fun and a nice way to save. Thanks, Discovery Museum!!
