Paleo American Crafts

Paleo American Crafts Paleo American Crafts goal is to introduce America's fascinating distant past to the 21st Century. Although, I may have certain items in stock.

I recreate stone tools, knives, weapons, pottery and the everyday items used by Ancient Americans, from the days of the Mammoth Hunters through the Late Prehistoric. I do this through making and offering for sale items that our ancestors used every day. This is not a wharehouse or store where I have in stock items. Generally, I make items that I feel are important to present. It may be an item tha

t caught my attention, or perhaps an item that requires a certain skill or technical ability to produce that I wish to learn. And what I make, I offer for sale.

Finally! A nice Corner Tang to wear around my neck, or wrist. I sold my last one without realizing how much I used it!

Proof that I was at The Heart of Texas Knap-in at Brady, Texas.

I'm really bad at taking pictures. I almost never do.

This is the only known photo of me while there.

Been a long time since last I made a Kerrville Knife. I thought it would be cool to have one with a natural hole in the middle of it.

Often, the old ones would find a stone with an interesting inclusion and incorporate it in the finished tool, or point.

So. While spalling rock this afternoon one of the spalls indeed, had a void in it.

Flaking across voids can be a real challenge. And thus one turned out pretty nice.

Sometimes, while quarrying rock, I find artifacts. The ancient quarry I discovered is near an ancient Indian Camp along a creek. So, it's kind of to be expected to find stuff. Even though I'm NOT looking for artifacts.

As a rule, I do not keep artifacts that I find. Unless there's something to be learned from it. Also, it's a long hike out and I only take what I can carry.

Anyway. The first two photos show the artifact itself. Likely a busted preform. I found it only a few feet away from and ancient hearth where previously I found a Castroville Dart Point.

So, without further context, I infer it to be from the same time period.

The other photos are nodules found in some of the deeper, more difficult to get to ravines.

Took a short break from spalling and bifaced a couple of spalls this evening.

I'll be quarrying some more rock tomorrow. With all the recent rains, should be good quarrying.

Lots of Rattlesnakes in the ravines I'll be in. So, I'll be hittin' it early.

Wish me luck!

I'd like to share a little more of what I've been doing. I've been quarrying quite a bit of rock lately and I'm trying to get caught up on my spalling.

I've noticed that there's not a lot of videos about spalling. Soooo...

Spalling rock is an entirely different skill set for a flintknapper. And if you really want to get good at flintknapping, it's a good idea to learn how to do it.

Quick spall of Edwards Plateau Chert using a hammerstone. When you hear that loud, sharp CRACK, you know it's a good strike!
