Bright Path from 1962 by Lynne Drexler is bursting with brightness and an ebullient sense of walking down a joyful path of fresh cut grass and bright yellow flowers. Although fully abstract, Drexler captures the feeling of a garden, the work brimming with uplifting energy. The painting, although small, is mighty, with a confident strong technique of colored tiles, which she developed in the early 1960’s.

A vital member of the Abstract Expressionist movement in Postwar New York, Mary Abbott is known for the energetic gestural sensibility of her paintings. She was born in New York to a prominent family, and became immersed in the art scene there in the 1940s. Through sculptor David Hare in 1948, Abbott was introduced to the experimental school, Subjects of the Artist. It was there that she studied with Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, and met Willem de Kooning. This was a crucial moment in Abbott’s career, leading to her embrace of complete abstraction. At the forefront of the avant-garde scene in New York, she was one of the earliest female members of the Artist’s Club and a regular participant in their lively discussions at the Cedar Street Tavern. Mary Abbott’s work in the late 1940s and early 1950s reflects the development of her technical repertoire, which encompasses both broad brushwork and graphic linear virtuosity.

Such qualities are evident in exuberant canvases like Ariel’s Voice from 1949. This is one of several paintings Abbott created around this time that drew inspiration from mythology and religion. Abbott often reused titles in more than one painting and Ariel was a favorite of hers. From the original Hebrew it literally means “Lion of God” and in the Old Testament is another name for Jerusalem. It has a long history in art and literature, of which Abbott was well aware.

The comic character Ariel in Shakespeare’s The Tempest was an airy, mischievous spirit. Alexander Pope utilized it for a sylph in The R**e of the Lock (1712) and one of the five major moons of Uranus is named Ariel in honor of Pope. Although it does not have a representational link to specific myths or narratives, it conveys the artist’s individual experiences and responses through the language of abstraction.

Hunt Slonem (born July 18, 1951) is an artist who combines abstract expressionism and representational imagery. He is best known for his paintings of bunnies and also of tropical birds, based on a personal aviary in which he keeps about 100 live birds of various species. His fascination with exotica can be traced to his experiences as a child in Hawaii and as a foreign exchange student in Managua, Nicaragua.

Since 1977, Hunt Slonem has had more than 350 exhibitions at prestigious galleries and museums internationally. In 2010 he held shows in the Coral Springs Museum, Coral Springs, Fl; Museo de Arte El Salvador, San Salvador, Columbia; Meadows Museum of Art, Shreveport, LA; Paul & Lulu Hilliard Museum, Lafayette, LA; McMullen Museum, Boston, MA; National Museum of Art, Sofia, Bulgaria; and more. Internationally, more than 100 museums include his work in their collections, among them the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. He has been commissioned to paint large-scale murals for the Bryant Park Grill, New York City and the former World Trade Center, NYC.

“Sudden Morn (1981-82; Plate 14), its title taken from Dickinson’s poem “Delight is as the flight,” might suggest, as does Dickinson, the abruptness with which life may end, even in the full glow of the sun. The child sees only what Dickinson calls “A Skein/Flung colored, after Rain”: a rainbow, described by Mason’s flowing medium. Filling her canvas with molten orange tipped by a strip of bright yellow, Mason depicts ribbons of violet and blue descending its left side, while mixing them to fill a loose rectilinear shape rectilinear shape to contrast with the glowing “sun”. One really cannot know what to make of the horizontal squiggle appearing in the interior midpoint. Green is poured wet into wet at right, diffusing chroma in Plumes as it descends.”
