WORLD GONE BY: 60 YEARS AGO, SEPT. 30, 1966
You save your money, buy your son books and send him to college and what does he do?
He joins the Volkswagen stuffing team.
By an intricate mathematical process, which consisted mainly of pushing and squeezing 20 engineers from the Illinois Institute of Technology Wednesday night won the first intercollegiate Volkswagen stuffing contest. Northwestern University, which finished second by placing only 19 into the compact car, took defeat like gentlemen and sportsmen.
“Fraud!” the Northwesterners yelled, “they didn’t use men, they used boys!”
Oct. 1, 1966 The Aberdeen Bobcats caught R.A. Long with its eye in the sky last night, and proceeded to unleash a devastating ground offensive which literally blew the visitors out of Stewart Field before 3,500 appreciative hometown viewers.
The final score of 34-7 could easily have gone much higher.
With halfback John Ancich and alternating fullbacks Tim Walker and Len Brudvik ripping off huge chunks of yardage virtually at will through the thinly-spread Jacks, the ‘Cats roared to a 20-0 halftime bulge, tipped it to 34-0 midway in the third period and coasted home with the reserved for most of the remainder.
Meanwhile the Aberdeen defense led by John Feuerstein, Brad Phillips, Rick Haas, Gary Emberley, Steve Dragecevich and Matt Donovick enjoyed its finest evening of the year.
