While we may have been away from the keyboard lately, (life happens) we’ve just returned from one of our favorite events: Fort Henry Days! Hosted by Fort Henry Living History and brought to life by dozens of outstanding participants, we danced in the rain and reveled in the sunshine with a slew of visitors!

Using chicken byproducts to grow food is our latest experiment! Our lovely friends (family) at Stone House History helped us choose some plants to adopt, from herbals to watermelons - and some brightly colored perennials. A little sweat equity, some lemonade, 🐓💩, and love have gotten us off to a great start! How does YOUR garden grow?

Silkie chickens can be documented in the Western World back to the publication of “Travels of Marco Polo” in 1300, in which he writes of a fowl with “hair all over, like a cat’s fur”, in Kenjanfu, China. The floof may be found in Chinese poetry as far back as the 8th century, and these docile, entertaining birds have been noted as ornamental additions to privileged flocks in Europe and North America, illustrating the expanding worldwide trade and 18th century fascination with the goods and art of the far East.
Plus, they’re darn cute.

Today’s experiment, in varying sizes, is iced lemon lavender shortbread. We think it’s lovely, and goes well with tea! Perhaps you can sample it when next we meet! (The 1” squares are the perfect bite.)
While we use modern techniques for a first run, we always hope to try these in an 18th century baking version…

A wonderful start to the season at Fort Frederick Market Fair with friends old and new! Cold snaps at night and a little rain meant chicks in the human roost- they do love our down blanket- and cloaks for the featherless.
F***y, Peggy, and Abigail traveled well and are looking forward to their next adventure!

When your silkie chicks commandeer the king size bed…Yeah. I guess I’ll go back to camp.

Nothing like a little last minute project push! Sunrise with coffee, hens, and bread rising down the hall is a great time to kick yourself for still being a procrastinator after all these years. 🤪☕️🐓🪡🧵

We spent the winter doing some much needed updating, health care, and family work, but we are excited to open the historical season with Fort Frederick Market Fair, April 25-28! In tow will be three of our newest team members, representing the upper echelons of 18th century society. Peggy, F***y, and Abigail are packing their bags!

Autumn is a wonderful season for enjoying the sunshine! It’s also a time to prepare for the coming winter. 18th century chickens may have witnessed (maybe too closely!) harvest celebrations, and a thickening of the wardrobe. These girls are already wearing down parkas!

Chickens were documented in the British Isles by the invading Romans, who mentioned more than once that they were used as advance guards. Being prey animals with a well developed social structure, the birds would sound an alarm at the approach of the enemy, warning the defending army effectively and earlier than human scouts could. Fast forward more than a thousand years, and these odd little creatures are still doing their work. 🐓🍋
