A linear perspective on “Extract”, an Exhibition by Lee Wei

Text by TAO Wen-yueh

The development of abstract art in graphic paintings in the twentieth century was a major revolution. It changed the way people look at art. In addition, from point and line to plane, it allowed artists freedom to be creative and wild and to create completely different visual effects in painting. Following Fauvism and Cubism, artists faced a new creative milestone. Contemporary artist Lee Wei chose abstract art as a cathartic way to express her thoughts and emotions. She has often immersed herself in the combination of dots, lines, and planes, and through the meditative rhythms, wanders in the space of poetry and Zen. This way, she combines creativity of East and West in an experience of joyful pleasure.

I don’t think Lee Wei became an artist by accident. The art education she received and the environment she was in were important stepping stones. She went abroad to study in the United States and Australia at an early age. First she spent two years at Fontbonne University in the United States to complete an MA in Fine Art, and then to Australia to study for an MA in Visual Arts from the University of Sydney. After graduation, she settled in Sydney, Australia, and stayed there for 20 years, where she became deeply influenced by Western art and its environment. Interestingly, she is a great admirer of her elder brother who is a Buddhist monk of deep religious passion. In him, Lee Wei sees a deep stoicism and extraordinary spiritual strength, which is different from common secular attitudes. Naturally, she has been influenced by him in subtle ways and thus developed liking towards Eastern religions and Zen philosophy. One of Lee Wei’s teachers at the University of Sydney, Lee Lindy, specialized in Zen art. Lee Lindy is a well-known Chinese artist in Australia. She creates fine large-scale installation art inspired by Zen philosophy. Lee Wei was deeply influenced by her teacher’s art and set out to explore the potential of vitality in her own art and track the rise and fall of the Nature. Along the path of her artistic career, Lee Wei developed her own combination of the Eastern and Western philosophy and aesthetics.

Lee Wei has always had a keen interest in the artistic exploration of space and her process is full of creativity and fun. The exhibitions taking place at the Yilan Story Museum and the 68 Contemporary Art Space this time feature art works related to the interaction between two-and three-dimensional space. Lee Wei said, “The theme of this exhibition revolves around the idea of ‘Extract’. I’m inspired by art concepts of Kandinsky and Franks Stella. Extending from points, lines to plane, I develop my art works from two-dimensional colors to three-dimensional installations. It is similar to the spatial transformation between the virtual and real in the metaverse.” She likes to try different media in her creative process, using different materials to create visual contrast, especially by enhancing the strength of a single element to achieve the dual relations between different media, like how the hardness or plasticity of acrylics corresponds to the softness of fabrics. The two qualities achieve balance of rigidity and flexibility and complement each other. In addition, steel sheets, aluminum wires, and mirror surfaces are used to transform or condition a fixed space. They create virtual and real, visual effects, penetrating and illusionary at the same time. She has incorporated neon colors in her works to create contemporary shapes and designs that express the poetic and romantic emotions that dwell deep in her heart.

To put it simply, Lee Wei's art is based on multiple aesthetics and philosophical concepts, such as the imperfect beauty of wabi-sabi closely related to the tea ritual promoted by Japanese tea master Ruiku, or the Chinese Taoist concept of uncontrolled natural forms. These are the main elements of her art, the fuel or inspiration which allows her to converse with virtual reality of the small universe in her heart. She states, in regard to her expectations for the artworks that, “my art reflects my thoughts on the Anthropocene, the ecological environment, and Gaia issues, which are further discussed in the three-dimensional universe. Through the creation of visual art and aesthetics, we can expand our imaginary space and create a world of infinity in the future, like carrying ‘an idea that can travel far’. I use the ‘idea’ to help me create in virtual and real space, a beautiful Garden of Eden, the Peach Blossom land that resides in the art of the mind!”

The Lee Wei I know is an artist who has always been in pursuit of learning and knowledge. Although she already has two master degrees of arts, she is still not satisfied. Last year, she was admitted to the National Taipei University of Education for the doctoral program of Inter-disciplinary Study of Art in the Department of Arts and Design. In the future, she hopes to do more three-dimensional installation art and sculptures, and to get the opportunity to show her works in public art venues both in Taiwan and abroad. She will promote her so-called metaverse idea. She’s such a strong artist with a great desire for learning, and I wish her a successful exhibition!
