Chinhsiang Liao's solo exhibition, ‘The Unreached Landscape’ comes to a close this Sunday! Through repeated thin washes of oil and subtle lines, the artist transforms the landscape into a visual space where perception and memory intertwine. These delicate compositions allow the scenes to drift between ambiguity and clarity, inviting viewers to reconstruct their own visual experience as they gaze at the canvas.

In an essay accompanying Chinhsiang Liao's solo exhibition, 'The Unreached Landscape', Lichuan Kuo, Assistant Professor of Medical Humanities at Tzu Chi University, notes: 'Every gaze may generate a different landscape. What the image summons is no longer a representation of the external world, but the viewer's internal memories, emotions, and life experiences. Perhaps the unreached landscape has never been a specific place, but rather an open state of looking.' Through the delicate layering and blending of thin oil washes, the artist detaches these scenes from tangible geographical coordinates. The paintings act as a gentle invitation to pause before the canvas, allowing this open gaze to slowly conjure a distant landscape entirely your own.

In the current series, the artist employs an extended process of repeatedly layering and applying paint. Guided by the flux of colour and form, the viewer witnesses the dissolution of boundaries within the visual intervals of shifting focus, creating a unique rhythm of observation. Amidst the tactile, gentle textures of the canvas, the artist captures the inevitability of fading, ultimately re-examining our collective visual habits when encountering a landscape.

本次展覽呈現藝術家廖進祥二十餘件繪畫作品，包含其於近年創作的〈海岸線〉、〈水之音〉、〈雨〉與〈遠山〉等系列。在其創作實踐中，藝術家多以低限的線條與多層薄塗的油彩，將畫布中作為承載時間與身體感知的空間，使繪畫從對客觀自然的寫實再現，延伸為感知、記憶與想像交織的內在探索。

本期展覽開放至 8 月 16 日，營業時間為週四至週日每日 11:00 至 17:30。作品購藏事宜請私訊或來信討論，歡迎大家夏日時節來八里走走！

Chinhsiang Liao's solo exhibition, ‘The Unreached Landscape’, officially opened last Sunday!

The exhibition features over twenty paintings by the artist, bringing together recent works from his ‘Coastline’, ‘Sound of Water’, ‘Rain’, and ‘Distant Mountain’s series. In his practice, Liao employs minimalist lines and layers of thin oil washes, approaching the canvas as a site that registers time and physical perception. Through this process, he moves painting beyond the objective representation of nature, expanding it into an internal exploration where perception, memory, and imagination intertwine.

在工作室中，可以看到許多正在等待堆疊、風乾的畫作。如同本此展出的兩年間所創作之系列作品，皆都需透過反覆的油彩薄塗，歷經無數次風乾與堆疊，這也是藝術家近年來嘗試在繪畫創作中，以低限的「線條」與「反覆塗抹」作為時間的度量衡，將畫布視為身體與時間交疊的感官現場的過程。

Studio Visit: Chinhsiang Liao

Stepping into Chinhsiang Liao’s studio, visitors are enveloped by lush greenery, various vivariums, and an extensive collection of books. The space functions as both a private site of production and a classroom, where he has spent the last decade teaching painting and artistic practice.

Throughout the studio, works in progress await further layers and drying time. As with the series produced over the past two years for his current exhibition, these pieces demand repetitive, thin applications of oil paint, undergoing countless cycles of layering and waiting. This process underscores the artist's recent methodology—employing minimalist lines and recurrent strokes as a measure of time, ultimately transforming the canvas into a sensory site where bodily perception and time intersect.

Due to the approaching typhoon, the opening reception for Chinhsiang Liao's solo exhibition, The Unreached Landscape, originally scheduled for this Sunday, has been postponed by one week. It will now take place on Sunday, 19 July at 2pm. The exhibition will be open to the public from 19 July to 16 August.

In his latest series of works, Liao delicately explores the materiality of painting. Through the layering and blending of thin oil washes, he creates a temporal rhythm akin to the ebb and flow of tides or drifting mist. Behind the Scenes: 'The Unreached Landscape' is in installation ☁️

We are counting down to the opening of ‘The Unreached Landscape’, a solo exhibition by Chinhsiang Liao, featuring his 2024–2025 series: Coastline, Sound of Water, Rain, and Distant Mountains.

For Liao, painting is an internal inquiry rather than a mere representation of nature. Utilising minimalist lines and layered oil paint to create subtle 'displacements', he invites viewers into a temporal gap of focusing and adjusting. ss space space 2026/27 Open Call 展覽徵件計畫正式開跑！

在過往三年的營運中，我們以「共同學習、共同工作」的理念，策劃並推動許多展演與國際合作企劃；然而，我們深知自己視角必然有其侷限，為了持續讓空間保持開放，本次徵件計畫因此誕生——我們期待以此建立一個開放的平台，讓嶄新的聲音、創作與研究得以被看見。

本次展覽徵件計畫不僅是一次展覽的呈現，在展出之前，我們為獲選者規劃了為期半年的「藝術家培力計畫（Artist Development Programme）」。獲選者將與我們的團隊展開密切協作，透過不同形式的共學活動，讓創作在有機的討論與學習中逐步醞釀並完整落實。

本次 Open Call 展覽徵件計畫我們將提供獲選者：

The ss space space 2026/27 Open Call is now accepting applications!

Over the past three years, we have consistently fostered a culture of 'co-learning and co-working', initiating numerous exhibitions and international collaborations. Yet, we are keenly aware that our own perspective inevitably has its limitations. To ensure our space remains truly open, we have launched this Open Call. We are building on our ethos to create an inclusive platform where fresh voices, innovative practices, and pioneering research can be brought to the fore.

Crucially, this initiative extends beyond a conventional exhibition showcase. Leading up to the exhibition, we have developed a six-month Artist Development Programme. The selected applicant will collaborate closely with our team through various co-learning activities, helping their creative practice to evolve and flourish through organic dialogue and shared learning.

For this Open Call, the selected applicant will be provided with:
❍ An exhibition production grant of NTD 22,000
❍ The Artist Development Programme
❍ Comprehensive support with exhibition planning
❍ Complimentary access to the gallery space, complemented by marketing, public relations, and administrative support
