Beyond the Canvas: Li Mei-shu, Yang San-lang, Li Shih-chiao

Li Mei-shu, Yang San-lang, and Li Shih-chiao are iconic figures of Taiwanese art history. Each followed an extraordinary life path. As Taiwan underwent a change of political regimes in 1945, these men’s artistic lives were tempered by the era’s upheavals, forging a resilient strength with which they responded to the great changes of their time, as they opened new pathways for art to reach deep into society. The destiny of their era led their lives to become closely entwined, and in the midst of these shifting circumstances, each in his own way fought tirelessly on behalf of Taiwanese art.
In 1947, Li Mei-shu took charge of rebuilding Zushi Temple in Sanxia, embedding his own artistic philosophy deeply into the architecture of folk religion. He personally designed such elements as the interior walls, stone pillars, and stone floors. He invited artists from various backgrounds to contribute drafts for the wall carvings and commissioned renowned calligraphers for the pillar couplets. He also replaced the traditional painted murals with durable bronze reliefs. Every corner of this local temple embodied the profound significance of aesthetic edification.
In 1946, Yang San-lang helped organize the Taiwan Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition with other members of the Tai Yang Art Society. In 1948, after the oppressive aftermath of the February 28 Incident had passed, the Tai Yang Art Exhibition was finally resumed. For many years, Yang was the Society’s core figure, nurturing emerging artists through a system of open calls, jury selection, and awards, and safeguarding this independent art platform that existed outside the official provincial exhibition system. Operating uninterrupted for 92 years since its inception, the Tai Yang Art Society stands as a testament to his perseverance and vision for the perpetuation of art.
Li Shih-chiao opened his own studio without charging tuition in 1948. There he taught drawing with rigorous discipline, laying the foundation for Taiwanese art. His selfless contributions made the Li Shih-chiao Art Studio immensely popular, upholding the standards of draftsmanship in postwar Taiwan for decades, to the benefit of students and fellow artists alike. In his own practice, he shifted from seeking acclaim at official exhibitions to exploring the essence of art and modern Western intellectual currents, inspiring future generations to pursue diverse forms of modern art.
While these three artists pursued their practices by different means, each devoted his whole life to engaging with the relationship between art and society. Li Mei-shu committed himself to the Zushi Temple reconstruction project day after day, remaining at his post for 36 years until his death. Yang San-lang steadfastly upheld the Tai Yang Art Society's institutional framework for over 60 years. Li Shih-chiao spent 34 years building a bastion of drawing, defending aesthetic standards. This exhibition presents their paintings alongside a wide array of records revealing their collective efforts to advance Taiwanese art—from manuscripts and archival documents to historical photographs and audiovisual materials. It seeks to guide visitors in understanding this chapter of history marked by hardship and sincere dedication. “Beyond the Canvas” represents the concrete practice of these three artists looking beyond the canvas to shoulder social responsibility and edify the public through their own efforts. Their admirable spirit leaves the world with endless cherished memories.
