In "Every Single Iris on the Internet (the first 100,000 images)", artist Anna RIDLER searches LAION’s large open database for images of “iris,” unfolding image-text pairs collected, categorized, and left behind by machine learning systems for viewers to look at again. The work cycles through these iris images, occasionally stopping at broken links, missing images, or ghostly traces left in the database index.
The database contains over 5 billion image-text pairings gathered from the Internet. Yet the Internet used by machine learning is often not the Internet we are currently browsing, but one that has been archived while gradually disappearing. In this specific case, “Iris” has multiple meanings: a flower, the colored center of the eye, a woman’s name. Yet, things are not as simple as they seem, particularly in a world where language structures technology and technology is dependent on that language having fixed and concrete meanings.
On the evening of May 21, artist Anna RIDLER will join panelist Clara Che Wei PEH and moderator Emily Hsiang-Yun HUANG for a live online tour of "Every Single Iris on the Internet (the first 100,000 images) "(2025).
Through this commented tour, they’ll discuss their overlapping creative practices and research methodologies, while reflecting on how the work investigates data as a form of modern mythology, the speculative reimagining of historical and ecological futures, and the entangled systems of control that shape both human and nonhuman worlds.
