Chris BERENS

In an era where AI-generated imagery is becoming instantaneous, Chris BERENS’ paintings offer a profound strike to the sense.

"HALLOW", Chris BERENS’ first solo exhibition in Taiwan, opened at AKI Gallery on 5/2. Featuring 21 brand-new works, the exhibition invites viewers on a journey through the hazy borderlands between dreams and memory.

What makes BERENS’ work so captivating is not just the ethereal subject matter, but his meticulous process. Using ink on photo paper, the artist builds his worlds layer by layer. Each piece requires extensive drying time and repeated hand-painting, often resulting in more than ten distinct layers. This technique creates a signature depth—a texture that feels like the flickering, blurred afterglow of a dream.

2026.05.02-06.06 "HALLOW" invites you to step into the unknown. Within these quiet, mysterious frames, perhaps every viewer can find a piece of their own imagination and emotion.

Artist Guide · First Time in Taiwan
MAY 02, 2026 16:30–17:15

Dutch artist Chris BERENS (b. 1976) will present his first solo exhibition in Taiwan, "HALLOW", opening on 5/2 at AKI Gallery. With an extensive international exhibition history spanning the Netherlands, Japan, New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, and Singapore, BERENS now introduces 21 new works in this exhibition. Through a visual vocabulary of the spectacular and the oneiric, the exhibition draws viewers into an unbounded space.

BERENS’ distinctive process of layering extends beyond formal collage; it may be understood as a response to the notion of “multiple temporalities”. From Rococo to the inward spirituality and symbolic density of nineteenth-century Romanticism, he reconfigures these historical visual languages within his practice. Through iterative processes of painting, cutting, and reassembling, the canvas becomes a site of sedimentation—where images surface like a dream seeping through the strata of time.

Photographer has been invited to participate in the Auckland Festival of Photography, where his "STAGE" series has been selected not only for this year’s Movement section, “Kori,” but also as the cover image of the festival zine—affirming the work’s cultural resonance within an international contemporary photography discourse.

“Movement [Kori] in photography is more than the trace of motion.” Within this curatorial idea, SHEN’s STAGE series offers a profound observation of local culture. Moving between social documentation and visual poetics, Chao-Liang SHEN has developed a distinctive photographic language between documentary realism and aesthetic poetics; his radiant yet restrained Taiwanese sensibility not only reveals the specificity of place, but resonates far beyond it.

Shao-Yen CHEN (b.1987) is a contemporary artist whose practice centers on painting, with a long-term focus on the theme of “landscape.” The landscapes in his work are not mere representations of nature, but reconstructions shaped by bodily perception, memory, and the passage of time.

Chen’s work has received notable recognition, including 2025 MADE IN TAIWAN, the First Prize at the 2017 Kaohsiung Award and the 2019 Grand View Emerging Artist Award. His work is collected by National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, the Art Bank, as well as private collections.

In ’s recent color works, color emerges as an active force; layered brushstrokes accumulate like records of time, allowing the surface to unfold with a sense of movement and duration.

His paintings belong neither to the past nor to the future. They remain within a continuously shifting present — a place where traces are allowed to stay, if only for a moment. April 4 – April 25, 2026, we warmly invite you to experience the exhibition in person, and to perceive, through your own senses, a world shaped by your own way of seeing.

【Current | 也趣台北 | The Water is Wide】

In 's work, fire becomes a central visual point. Fire is both a source of light and a symbol of ritual, transformation, and disappearance. Within the Hakka philosophy of life, death is part of everyday life. It is within this cultural context that Wang-Chuen WONG interprets the theme: not as a tragic rupture, but as a presence that still carries warmth.

On the first floor, viewers enter the night, wandering through rural landscapes where darkness becomes both a real setting and a gateway into deeper perception. Ascending to the second floor, daylight gradually emerges, and the images move between life and death, allowing the weight and fragility of life to surface through the act of viewing. On the third floor, night returns once again. Time appears extended, and the rhythm of the images becomes more contemplative. Ultimately, the works point toward a fundamental question: how we come to understand life within the limits of time.

New works from Yang-tsung FAN’s Swimming Pool Series debut at Art Basel Hong Kong.

Extending the artist’s sustained contemplation of the public swimming pool, the water’s surface emerges as both a visual threshold and a psychological divide. Beneath it, the turbulence of splashing waves carries a heightened, almost unspoken emotion, while along the sunlit poolside, figures linger in states of quiet ease. Through this contrast, FAN subtly evokes the latent tensions that inhabit shared spaces, where restraint and desire, exposure and concealment, coexist in balance.
