On Labor Day in 1980, Apollo Art Gallery, together with artist Hung Jui-Ling, launched a charity sale titled “Labor Day: Relief for the Yong’an Coal Mine Disaster.”
Hung Jui-Ling had long been devoted to the concerns of the working class and underprivileged communities. Having worked as a miner in Ruifang for over 30 years, he was deeply saddened upon hearing the news of the mining disaster. All proceeds from the sale of the artworks were donated in full to support disaster relief efforts.
During his years as a miner, Hung Jui-Ling always carried a sketchbook and pen with him, using spare moments at work to capture miners’ daily lives through quick sketches. With ink, he rendered concise lines and expressive brushstrokes, fluidly depicting the miners’ strong physiques and weathered faces. Combined with a dark tonal palette, his works vividly recreate scenes from the mines, revealing a profound humanitarian spirit.
These works not only offer later generations a glimpse into the lives of miners, but also became his most representative series, earning him the title of “the miner-artist.”
