In 2011, during an American football game in Seattle, over 60,000 fans cheered and jumped so hard for a touchdown that a nearby seismograph detected a 30-second vibration. This event was named the ”Beast Quake.“ It not only made the touchdown player, Marshawn Lynch, famous in earth science but also changed how we think about an ”Artificial earthquake“—showing it doesn‘t just come from intentional destruction.
”Artificial earthquake“ means a ground vibration caused by human activity rather than nature, usually from energy development or scientific tests. However, as the global population grows, unintentional artificial earthquakes are also appearing. Even our daily walking and jumping can accidentally create vibrations strong enough to be measured, or even cause real damage to our surroundings.
Vibration and Traces captures the subtle movements and footsteps we often ignore in daily life. By amplifying these tiny vibrations and noises through electronic circuits, the energy is turned into power for a wall-drilling machine. During the exhibition, this artwork gathers vibrations from the environment to leave permanent marks in the space, turning invisible human movements into visible physical damage.
