Got a new teapot? Wondering how to properly “season” it? 🫖✨
The strangest method we’ve ever heard was boiling the teapot with tofu or pork ribs… 😆
We honestly can’t remember the exact process, but apparently people say it works pretty well. Still… food is food, so maybe let’s not waste it 😂
At Ruoshui, we use a slower but safer method to prepare and clean teapots:
① Prepare a clean stainless steel pot that has never been in contact with oil.
② Place the teapot into the pot and fill it with warm water until the teapot is fully submerged.
⚠️ Important! Don’t pour very hot water directly onto one spot of the teapot — we’ve cracked two teapots that way before 😂
Let the water cool slightly first, then fill both the inside and outside evenly.
③ Change the water twice a day for 7 days.
(If you’d like to use the teapot sooner, you can simply change the water again once it cools.)
For pre-owned teapots, since we usually don’t know what kind of tea the previous owner brewed, we always deep-clean the teapot before using it again.
To clean the teapot, add sodium percarbonate during step ② — about 1–2 teaspoons per teapot.
When dissolved in hot water, sodium percarbonate breaks down into water and oxygen, helping release tea stains and residue trapped deep inside the pores and tiny gaps of the clay.
If one cleaning doesn’t feel sufficient, simply replace the water and repeat the process again.
You can also gently scrub stubborn stains with a small toothbrush, then extend step ③ for another 3 days to allow the clay pores to fully release any remaining substances.
Interestingly, a previously seasoned teapot already has a kind of “foundation.”
Even after being fully cleaned and re-seasoned, it usually develops much faster than a completely brand-new teapot ✨
