Tina Keng Gallery

Su Meng-Hung’s The Flowers of Coromandel unfolds from the history of Coromandel screens, objects once made in Asia, circulated through trade, and reimagined in Europe through the lens of Chinoiserie.

Curated by Barbara Pollack, the exhibition reflects on how images travel across cultures, carrying with them desire, fantasy, misunderstanding, and transformation. Through paintings and folding screens, Su layers Eastern and Western motifs, floral imagery, lacquer-like surfaces, and traces of ornament to question where authenticity ends and imagination begins.

Beautiful at first glance, the works slowly reveal themselves as gardens of cultural exchange, where decoration becomes memory, and beauty becomes an entry point for rethinking history and cultural relationships.

The exhibition is on view through July 11, 2026.

A glimpse into Su Xiaobai’s making process.

Working with natural lacquer since 2003, Su Xiaobai builds each surface through layers of lacquer, pigment, texture, and time. Rather than treating lacquer as a decorative finish, he transforms it into a substance of depth, one that absorbs, conceals, reveals, and changes.

Opening soon in Venice, as an official Collateral Event of the 61st International Venice Biennale. ( )

▋Su Xiaobai

An unexpected encounter with lacquer in Fuzhou, China in 2003 marked the beginning of Su Xiaobai’s artistic journey. Over more than two decades, he has devoted himself to mastering a single material—allowing time, process, and the intrinsic nature of lacquer to shape each work. Through layering, drying, and polishing, the surface reveals a quiet yet profound presence, rooted in Eastern aesthetics of restraint and depth.

Su Xiaobai will present “Alchemical Universe”, organized by the Su Xiaobai Foundation ( ) in collaboration with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art(), as an official Collateral Event of the 61st International Venice Biennale. (), Curated by Stephen Little, Curator of Chinese Art and Head of the
Chinese, Korean, and South and Southeast Asian Art Departments, LACMA
and designed by architect Kulapat Yantrasast ().
