Europe in 1934 was enveloped in unease. The effects of the Great Depression had yet to dissipate, while the political forces of Adolf Hi**er and Benito Mussolini rapidly ascended as the specter of war drew near. Within this historical context, the playwright T. S. Eliot (1888-1965) composed the pageant play called “The Rock.” In the opening stanza, three questions are posed in succession:
Where is the Life we have lost in living?
Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?
Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?
Less than a century later, a sense of déjà vu has emerged today. Humanity continues to move forward, only to find itself caught in the same loop. Ukraine and the Middle East are shrouded in smoke and artillery fire, and Taiwan, where we reside, is likewise not exempt from military threats. At the same time, artificial intelligence has introduced disruptive imagination, which after an initial wave of worshipful enthusiasm has given rise to new anxieties: the erasure of jobs, widening wealth inequality, the difficulty of distinguishing information from disinformation, and the transformation of interpersonal human relationships. These issues have cropped up one after the other, while society oscillates between expectation and unease.
At such a moment, it is even more critical to reconsider fundamental questions, such as, what are life, wisdom, and the essential grounding of human existence? The Afterglow from the Margins exhibition may be understood as a silent harmony emerging from the periphery. The works of Su Wong-Shen and Shao Ting-Ju offer no exhortation; rather, through restrained imagery and purified forms, they gently reflect the humanity that has been left behind amid the turbulence of the times.
