Gansai colors and ink on paper
⁡
⁡
A passing moment on a walk, eyes pausing on two leaves overlapping and unfolding. "The Unfolding of Two" captures the very beginning of life's rhythm, where space opens up for organic dialogue. In soft, layered washes of ink, the leaves seem to gently catch and hold one another, creating a quiet moment of harmony in the micro corners of life.

Into the Unseen

Ink and color on paper
⁡
⁡
⁡
Deep, heavy ink permeates and settles into the paper, as if all cluttered thoughts sink into the unseen. Inspired by the idiom, Teng Yu Chieh simplifies the composition into pure ink textures. As outer forms dissolve and attachments melt away, the self returns to stillness, merging freely with the quiet presence of nature.

Concluding the "Where It Stills" series, the perspective shifts to the subtle details of leaf veins and stems. Light grey ink bleeds into the paper, weaving a net-like texture. Stripping away complex lines, it leaves behind a quiet, pure moment of contemplation.

137.5 x 68 cm 2026
Ink on paper
⁡
⁡
⁡
Taking the coconut tree as its subject once again, "Maybe in Another Life" approaches the form through a more expressive, macroscopic lens. The lush, expanding canopy resembles fireworks bursting in the midsummer night sky. Moving away from literal depiction, Teng Yu Chieh subtly orchestrates the rhythm and gradation of ink, capturing a sense of meditative wandering.

Ink on paper
⁡
⁡
⁡
Focusing on the textured surface of a coconut tree trunk, "With the Wind" takes a microscopic view of nature’s details. Through a practice of "subtraction," Teng Yu Chieh allows the ink to breathe and permeate the paper, transforming natural patterns into a rhythmic, poetic language of contemporary ink.

Tall, lush coconut palms are a familiar sight on Teng Yu Chieh’s walks through Taipei.

“The Verdure” captures their overlapping forms through layered ink and subtle color. Rhythmic brushstrokes create depth and texture, while simplified forms and open space evoke a quiet, refreshing sense of summer.
