The Landscape, Recast

Naomi Okubo is known for crafting intimate psychological landscapes through motifs of textiles, blossoms and greenhouses. In Sewing / Home, she continues her signature visual language, transforming sewing — a quotidian feminine craft — into an abstract meditation on memory, belonging and home.

Growing up in a Yokohama household filled with Western furnishings, and drawing alongside her painter mother from an early age, “family” has remained the central theme of Okubo’s practice. For the artist, family structure serves as the archetype for understanding interpersonal dynamics, societies, and even cross-cultural relations.

Threads, patchwork, greenhouses, house sketches and William Morris-style florals populate the canvas, embodying humanity’s persistent attempt to stitch fragmented memories together and assemble an ideal vision of “home”.

The Landscape, Recast

Daydream carries forward Jon Ching’s consistent fascination with ecological symbiosis, crafting natural landscapes hovering between observation and imagination with greater restraint.

Golden poplar leaves morph into schools of fish swimming freely among treetops. Trees, foliage, fish and birds belong to entirely separate ecosystems, yet through precise forms and masterful handling of light and shadow, Jon Ching blends these impossible combinations seamlessly, forming a fluid, organic cycle across the canvas.

Autumn hues of Colorado, California coastlines and Hawaiian oceans converge on his paintings, weaving an otherworldly scenery unfindable in reality yet vividly anchored in memory. In this way, landscape becomes a construct woven from lived experience, emotional belonging and recollections of nature. (Acquired)

The Landscape, Recast

Jon Ching

Landscape interpreted in contemporary art far exceeds mere depictions of natural scenery; it serves as a lens through which we perceive the world. Embedded with memories, emotions, cultural experiences and power dynamics, it reflects the ever-evolving bonds between humanity and nature, as well as between individuals.

For this two-person exhibition, Jon Ching and Naomi Okubo adopt ecological and humanistic perspectives respectively. They regard "landscape" as a projection of psychological and social frameworks, inviting audiences to rethink the world we inhabit.

Drawing from years of close observation of ecosystems, Jon Ching employs exquisite realist brushwork to interweave birds, aquatic life, insects and botanicals, birthing entirely new forms of life. His lush, enigmatic compositions articulate the interdependent, interconnected symbiosis shared by all living beings.

Naomi Okubo turns her gaze inward to the inner psychological landscape. Through figures, blossoms, textiles and ornamental patterns, she constructs a mental realm situated amid family, personal memory and social conventions. Beneath her lavish, gentle visual aesthetic lies thoughtful contemplation of personal identity, gender roles and cultural expectations.

Landscape: In Reconstruction is now showing at Enlighten Gallery. We sincerely invite you to visit the exhibition.

The Landscape, Recast

Jon Ching

In an age of endless fast-moving digital imagery, painting moves at a gentle, deliberate pace.Constant phone visuals have shifted how we see the world, yet painting holds irreplaceable depth—time preserved in pigment and brushstrokes.

Today’s realism does not merely copy reality; it reinterprets it, woven from memory, feeling, culture and imagination.

Jon Ching crafts surreal ecosystems with masterful skill. Plants, creatures and minerals intertwine and evolve across his canvases, crafting familiar-yet-strange scenes that reveal unseen bonds between all life.

Naomi Okubo turns landscape inward to the human psyche. Layered florals, textiles and ornate patterns balance opulence with quiet unease. Her figures dwell in curated gardens, becoming part of the scenery themselves.

Born 1985 in Tokyo, Naomi Okubo holds an MFA in Painting from Musashino Art University. She is an internationally established artist and resided in New York for an extended creative period. Raised by parents with conflicting worldviews, her practice consistently explores themes of memory, cross-cultural identity and gendered confinement.

She has received overseas residency grants from the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan and the Yoshino Gypsum Art Foundation. Her works have been featured in international publications including Juxtapoz, The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, the Financial Times and DIE ZEIT. Her exhibition history spans Japan, Taiwan, the United States, Canada and Sweden, and her art is held in the permanent collection of Hallands Konstmuseum, Sweden.

Her visual language fuses Eastern decorative aesthetics with Western symbolic painting, where lush, ornate surfaces unfold rich psychological depth. She frequently employs faceless female figures, greenhouses, florals and textiles as central motifs to depict the inner mental landscapes shaped by family dynamics and social conditioning. In recent years, she has expanded her practice with mixed media such as sewing and glass to deepen her artistic range.

For this exhibition, Okubo presents four brand-new 2026 works executed on heavy-weight cotton canvas, embodying her gentle yet incisive perspective beneath lavish imagery. We welcome you to visit during the exhibition run.
