For 'Li Chen: Spiritual Journey through the Great Ether' at the Guangdong Museum of Art, curator writes:
"In the summer of 2017, I curated the exhibition 'Being: In/Voluntary Drift' for at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei, Taiwan. Structured in four chapters—'Arriving, Leaving, Entering, and Exiting'—it traced his creative evolution from spiritual iconography to reflections on the contemporary world, focusing on the dialectics of humanity, existence, and being. That exhibition marked the beginning of my in-depth dialogue with Li Chen and was the first systematic presentation of his artistic system in Taiwan, China. Nearly a decade later, we reconvened at the Guangdong Museum of Art's Bai’etan venue with 'Spiritual Journey through the Great Ether,' a comprehensive gathering of his most iconic series and latest works. It serves both as a milestone retrospective of his creative career and a progressive unfolding of his spiritual trajectory.
Li Chen's sculptures inherently possess their own aura; they speak in a silent, warm language. Within the weight of bronze and clay, the lightest souls reside. Between the rounded, silent forms surges life's most genuine (dòngnéng – dynamic energy). Lightness and heaviness, void and solidity, worldly detachment and engagement, the physical body and the spirit—these are never opposing forces in his creations. Instead, they naturally merge, emanating a strand of life's philosophy.
As an artist from , Li Chen's roots run deep in the East, yet he has never been bound by region, convention, or tradition. He draws from the ethereal emptiness of Zen and the unfettered freedom of Daoism. He does not create idols, nor does he pursue superficial appearances. Guided by spiritual resonance and illuminated by inner nature, he allows each sculpture to possess a life that breathes freely. More remarkably, his works harbor a subtle, elusive humor, a joy that traverses human nature. Within the solemn, somber black fields, this quality does not assert itself but radiates its own light, softening a world that can sometimes feel cooling and alienating, making it suddenly warm and approachable.
In short, Li Chen's body of work stands on its own unique path, not chasing trends, requiring no appended explanations, and certainly needing no interpretation. This exhibition simply invites a shared, carefree roaming of the spirit—boundless, weightless, and unfettered."
