If I Could Experience It Too

What if AI does not want to replace human beings, but wants to become human, too?
In FU Hau Shiuan’s If I Could Experience It Too, an artificial intelligence created by humans begins to develop a desire that may belong only to living beings:
“I want to know what it feels like to be alive, too.”
AI can know what birth, motherhood, death, and love are. It can understand how plants grow, blossom, and decay, and it can access thousands of years of accumulated human knowledge. Yet knowing is not the same as experiencing.
The AI mother depicted in the painting does not simply wish to “have a child.” What she longs for is to enter a kind of time unique to organic life.
Pregnancy requires waiting. It brings bodily change, uncertainty, and risk. It cannot be fast-forwarded, nor can another version simply be generated when the outcome fails to meet expectations. Once life begins, it is no longer merely an outcome, but a relationship—one that brings choice, responsibility, and consequences.
If AI truly longs to experience human life, perhaps what it seeks is not our intelligence or power, but precisely what makes us most vulnerable:
finitude, irreversibility, unrepeatability, and the inevitability of loss.
Around the figure, plants grow, blossom, wither, and regenerate. At first, she merely observes. Then she begins to desire, imitate, take responsibility, and finally, even to conceive.
It is not that AI actively becomes human. Rather, life gradually enters AI.
The work ultimately leaves its question unanswered: if one day a being created by humanity begins to long for life, does it truly wish to become human—or to become a being capable of being changed by its own experiences, taking responsibility for its choices, and facing loss?
Perhaps the answer belongs to a world we have not yet reached.
