The Island’s Gift|Lai, Hsiao-Che Ceramic Solo Exhibition
The Island’s Gift | The Land’s Signature, An Anchor for the Spirit
On the path of creation, I often move between the weight of everyday life and the ideal of pure creation. Amid shifting trends and the pull of inner searching, the original direction of creation can sometimes become unclear. I am grateful for the reminder this island has given me: so much of what we carry has already been quietly rooted deep within us. This gift has allowed me, through this body of work, to find a direction that feels steady and clear.
As a child, I followed my elders in clasping my hands before the gods, without fully understanding what it meant. As I grew older, I continued to hear their reminders about seasons, rituals, and offerings. What I once saw as mere formality gradually revealed itself as a living inheritance. These seemingly small and ordinary words quietly preserve the relationship between people and the land. Only after experiencing the rises and falls of life did I come to understand that they are not simply habits, but ways of carrying reverence, care, and a sense of grounding from one generation to the next.
What this land has given me is not only temple belief, but also animal forms, plant-like gestures, red earth, and the protective imagination found in folk stories and local mythology. These elements, long present in everyday life, have gradually become part of my connection with the land. In this series, I transform these elements into sculptures that carry a sense of guardianship. Beginning with animal-like forms, the works incorporate the gestures of branches, stems, and budding leaves. Through the rough texture of red earth and traces that recall excavated objects, they leave behind the layered marks of island, time, and lived experience.
