How to Hold Your Breath – 2024 Asian Art Biennial

2021 Asian Art Biennial or

ganized by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA) will open on October 30, 2021. Taiwanese independent curator Nobuo TAKAMORI is named to convene a multi-national, interdisciplinary curatorial team for this edition of the Asian Art Biennial with curators from various countries, including Taiwanese curator Yu-Kuan HO, Filipino curator Tessa Maria GUAZON, Indian curator Anushka RAJENDRAN, and Thai curator and art historian Thanavi CHOTPRADIT. This edition adopts the theme of “ ,” which pays tribute to celebrated architect Da-Hong WANG’s English sci-fi novel, Phantasmagoria (titled “幻城” in Mandarin). Whereas the word “phantasmagoria” refers to a building constructed of spectral, illusory light, the newly coined word “phatasmapolis” comprises “phantasma” and “polis,” which respectively mean “apparition or specter” and “city” in Greek. With the city as a framework, Phatasmapolis investigates the idea of “Asian Futurism” as well as the historical context of how sci-fi topics and materials have been utilized and represented in Asian modern and contemporary art.

Merv Espina

Artist Talk: Self-Supporting
Time: 2 March 16:45 – 17:45
Venue: NTMoFA, Gallery Street
Speakers: Artist Jasmin Werner, Fr. Joyalito Tajonera
Moderator: Curator Merv Espina
Special Thanks: Goethe-Institut Taipei

This conversation between Fr. Joyalito Tajonera and Jasmin Werner explores the intersections of art, care, and social activism, in the context of Southeast Asian migrant issues and labor histories in Taiwan, and their own personal experiences with Philippine labor export policies.

Overseas Filipino Workers have been sending several million packages every year to their home country since the start of the Philippine labor export policy in 1973. Known as Balikbayan Boxes, these packages serve to maintain a physical and emotional connection between workers abroad and their families back home.

For the free-standing sculptural arrangements in the 2024 Asian Art Biennial, German-Filipina artist Jasmin Werner invited Maryknoll priest Fr. Joyalito Tajonera and the Ugnayan Migrant Ministry, an Overseas Filipino Workers shelter he established in Taichung, to select food and household items for Balikbayan Boxes. At the end of the Biennial, the commodities that comprise the sculptures will be sent as Balikbayan Box to the respective families of the shelter volunteers.

Jasmin Werner’s “Self-supporting (Selbsttragend)” (2024) was produced in collaboration with Ugnayan Migrant Ministry, Tanzi Catholic Church, Fr. Joyalito Tajonera, Rodrigo Galarosa, Benedick Lim, John Paul Barnache, Dolmar Boreo, Rosel Rodelas, Fretchelle Mae, Dawa; supported by Goethe-Institut Taipei.

“The diversity of curatorial approaches and artistic practices in How to Hold Your Breath was a source of interest, as the five curators brought artworks from different parts of Asia and its diasporas together into unexpected conversations, but it also created occasional incongruity, as one stepped or leaped from one world into the next.”

"As a biennial, ‘How to Hold Your Breath’ is a timely proposition that speaks to the intersectional nature of our current challenges. Issues relating to labour, environment and technology are inevitably intertwined and require the nuanced understanding of different contexts. The biennial attempts the difficult task of pointing at this layered reality instead of prescribing reductive definitions. By expanding the scope of what 'Asia' entails, it also acknowledges the vast networks of interdependence and entanglement, both beyond and within the diverse region."

Julia Sarisetiati

Indonesian artist Julia Sarisetiati (b. 1981) is a member of ruangrupa, an artist initiative based in Jakarta that runs Gudskul, a collective platform for art practitioners. Julia previously led Gudskul's "Collective Sustainability Strategy," one of 11 key topics. In 2013, she managed RURU Corps, a visual communication bureau that aimed to develop economic sustainability models for artist-led spaces. Her 2020 project proposal, PulangPergi, a platform for sharing experiences between migrant workers, received an honorary mention from “Prix Ars Electronica”. Since 2021, Julia has been part of the lumbung.space working group, exploring the idea of a self-organized digital platform for inter-local art collectives. In November 2022, she co-founded Gudsis, alongside Gertrude Flentge and Frederikke Hansen, to further develop the lumbung concept, emphasizing collaboration and building a commons-based economy.
