The inspiration for this work stems from the process of cultural heritage preservation and adaptive reuse of the military dependents’ village in Qingshui, Taichung. During the restoration, portions of the buildings were demolished, “opening up” what had once been long, enclosed row houses and narrow alleyways.
Walking through the construction site, layers of walls, bricks, and tiles are exposed one after another. The space no longer exists as a complete structure, but instead as fragments composed of traces and remnants. Within these peeled-back walls, one can imagine scenes of past lives: the patterned floor tiles left by different households, the stratified surfaces of walls, and the marks of use gradually bring each family’s daily life into view.
At the same time, the village once served as a place for children to gather and play. Moving and lingering through the alleys, they formed territories through the varied patterns of floor tiles, while “corners” often became spatial nodes imbued with a sense of possession. In contrast to the openness of plazas, corners offer a subtle, intimate sense of security, introducing layered spatial heterogeneity.
This work therefore draws upon “walls,” “corners,” and “territories” as spatial archetypes, transforming these memories and traces into visual compositions, and reimagining the spatial relationships and lived order that once existed within the village.
