Chen Yun : Light Shimmering through Timely Rain

YIRI ARTS is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Chen Yun, on view from May 21, 2026.

Chen (b. 1988, Yilan) constructs her paintings through modular compositions and a montage-like narrative structure, evoking fragments of submerged memory. Recurring motifs such as fixed scenes, close-ups of hands, female figures, and intimate objects form a visual language that operates between narration and omission, allowing meaning to emerge through processes of assembly and reconfiguration.

Set within a contemporary condition defined by flux and instability, the exhibition seeks to establish a point of orientation between shifting memory and perception. Presented as constellations of works, the paintings unfold across the wall like fragments of memory, forming a spatialized, almost theatrical field that extends beyond the singular image.

Moving between figuration, everyday imagery, and abstract textures, Chen’s practice emphasizes both continuity and interruption. Through layered surfaces and deliberate intervals, her works articulate an ongoing inquiry into painting, where meaning persists through accumulation and change becomes an extension of form and experience.

In the Course of Seven Days

《The Birds of New York》系列則取材自藝術家於紐約舊書店發現的《The Birds of America》復刻圖鑑,透過重新改寫背景,讓鳥類從理想化的自然風景回到真實的都市環境。

Tsai Pou-Ching’s latest solo exhibition, In the Course of Seven Days, begins with the encounter of a deceased raccoon discovered in a New York City park, unfolding into a reflection on urban ecology and the evolving condition of nature within contemporary life. Through video, painting, and ceramic installations, the artist reconsiders animals that inhabit the threshold between human society and the natural world, questioning how they continue to exist within landscapes shaped by concrete, systems, and artificial environments.

The exhibition title draws from the Taiwanese funeral ritual of “doing seven” alongside the narrative structure of Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron, interweaving themes of death, companionship, and the passage of everyday time. The Birds of New York series originates from vintage reproductions of The Birds of America discovered by the artist in a New York secondhand bookstore. By altering the original backgrounds, Tsai repositions the birds from idealized natural settings into the realities of contemporary urban life.

In Tsai Pou-Ching’s practice, nature no longer appears as something distant or untouched, but as an unstable condition continuously formed alongside the city itself. Each work remains autonomous yet interconnected, ultimately converging toward the same unfinished sky.

At the Edge of Coexistence

Taiwanese artist Chen Sheng-Wen presents At the Edge of Coexistence at the century-old Wufeng Farmers' Association. Centered on crushed longan shells, the exhibition examines the shifting relationship between human systems and natural environments within agricultural contexts.

Departing from the perspective of bee movement, the works highlight how bees are both essential to production and subject to exclusion, positioned within boundaries that are simultaneously permitted and revocable. By transforming longan shells into particulate matter, the artist dissolves fixed spatial divisions, allowing pollen and pesticide, generation and exclusion, to converge within the same material condition.

Through installation and spatial choreography, the exhibition invites viewers to inhabit a bee-like perspective, prompting reflection on how coexistence is constructed within contemporary systems of production.

HUANG Tzu-Yu : Ms. Potato in B1

YIRI ARTS is pleased to present Ms. Potato in B1, a solo exhibition by Taiwanese artist HUANG Tzu-Yu, opening on May 21, 2026. This marks the artist’s first solo presentation at the gallery’s Taipei space.

Working primarily with acrylic on wood, Huang has recently introduced water into her process, allowing pigments to flow across the surface and develop a distinctly time-based painterly language. Her practice has evolved from elongated narrative formats to constellations of small-scale works, establishing a visual structure that is both rhythmic and highly legible.

The recurring “small figure” within her compositions functions as a signature motif, tracing a continuous forward movement toward an uncertain future, while maintaining a balance between narrative and form.

Taking “potato” as its central metaphor, the exhibition reflects the artist’s shifting condition between labor and artistic production, marking a significant development within her recent practice.

Closing Soon|LIMBUS LABORIS|YIRI ARTS Jakarta

The intersection of this exhibition lies in how both artists approach textile as a material that reveals the conditions of labor within systems of production and their aftermath. Huang Po-Chih examines textile through the structure of industrial labor, where bodies, memory, and transnational economic networks are entangled within the history of the garment industry. Meanwhile, Widi Asari approaches textile from the moment when such productive intensity recedes, focusing on how remaining materials are held, stored, and managed as they exist between function and waste.

At this point of convergence, textile becomes a site where labor, material residue, and ecological consequences intersect. The exhibition presents this intersection as a threshold condition.

In the Course of Seven Days

Taiwanese artist Tsai Pei-Ching’s upcoming solo exhibitionIn In the Course of Seven Days opens on April 25 at MOCA Taipei.

In the Course of Seven Days constructs a contemporary allegory transcending geography and mortality. Centered on a deceased raccoon encountered during a residency in New York, the exhibition synthesizes the Taiwanese "seven-day funeral" ritual with the structure of Boccaccio’s Decameron to examine the scale of nature at the urban fringe. By transforming the soil of the animal’s passing into a functional ceramic plate, Tsai internalizes death as a form of persistence.

The series The Birds of New York further deconstructs classical avian atlases, replacing idealized wilderness with concrete realities to reveal an ecology in a state of "becoming" amidst man-made landscapes. Through video, ceramics, and painting, Tsai redefines the fluid boundaries between humanity, animality, and civilization.
