Curatorial Statement | Reappearing Aura
In 1935, philosopher Walter Benjamin predicted that in the age of mechanical reproduction the aura of artworks—their unique presence in time and space—would gradually fade. Today, that prediction seems fulfilled. Images circulate endlessly across digital platforms, consumed and forgotten in seconds. We see everything, yet remember almost nothing.
But has aura truly disappeared?
This exhibition proposes another possibility through the quiet presence of black-and-white photography. As Roland Barthes wrote in Camera Lucida, every photograph testifies to “that-has-been”—a trace of something that once existed. In the grain of film and the physical marks of light, these images resist instant consumption and invite a slower gaze.
More importantly, each viewer also arrives with their own “that-has-been”—their memories, experiences, and personal history. When a viewer pauses before an image, a unique encounter emerges. A detail, a shadow, or a texture may unexpectedly strike the viewer, becoming what Barthes called the punctum.
In that moment—when memory meets image—the aura reappears.
This exhibition invites you to slow down, to look carefully, and to rediscover the fragile distance where aura quietly returns.
