Exhibition Concept
From Afar records artist Kayoung Choi's journey across Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, with the can as her map. What was ordinary there becomes strange once it arrives here; through these things we taste a time we have not lived and a place we have never been. Like a can.
Canned beef, made to travel ever farther, gave rise to Naju gomtang in Korea and to beef noodle soup in Taiwan, joining Kaohsiung to Incheon and Shimonoseki, and Naju to New Taipei, Yunlin, and Kyoto. Canned hairy crab, meanwhile, once linked Japan, Korea, and the former Manchuria a century ago; yet in tracing its path, the artist met instead rupture, division, and detour. Living through a summer of typhoons in Taiwan, she found in the island's "typhoon noodles" the human capacity for response, imagination, and invention in the face of disaster. For Choi, this map of cans, rolled into a cylinder, brings what lay far apart edge to edge. Born into a generation that knew neither colony nor Cold War, she looks through the can at the disasters of a hundred years ago and of now; and her gaze, once sent far, curves back to rest on us, here, now.
