Project:
My stay at the Taroko Art and Research Residency took place in September this year. I spent the whole month in the village with a host family. My original research project aimed to (1) find out about people's sports activities in the village, (2) research about physical activities in the past, and (3) then make a comparison with the sports lifestyle of city dwellers in Taipei and Hamburg.
However, based on the experiences and conversations with the local villagers, I partially changed the topic of the research project. In essence, it remained a comparative study of the surviving pre-civilizational cultural traces from the past with modern cultural manifestations, but the subject matter changed. The focus of the comparative study was now on ancient mythology and the belief system of the village community. Perhaps the most famous legend of the tribe, namely the myth of the crossing of the rainbow bridge, aroused my particular interest. Important elements of this story can also be found in a famous exchange of letters between the two perhaps most important pioneers of the 20th century, Albert Einstein and Sigmund Freud, which has been declared an intangible world cultural heritage by UNESCO. At Albert Einstein's suggestion, the cultural theorist and critic of religion Sigmund Freud explained the interaction between human nature, society and the influence that art and culture can exert on it. Ultimately, this famous exchange of words is also a plea for the preservation and development of art and culture in every society.
Inspired by these two historical texts and my experiences in the village, I decided to create a work of art that makes an artistic-associative comparison and perhaps even builds a bridge between the two texts. Texts that were written in two different cultures and eras. At the turn of the year, I will be able to present a concept in the early stages of this work as a result of my artistic research project in the village.

Researcher:
Jakob Wlodarczyk is a German conceptual and multimedia artist who currently lives and works in Taiwan. His works are based on concepts that he realises in an experimental way. One of the focal points of his work is the artistic exploration of the border area between text and image, which he thematises not only in his installations, but also on various Internet platforms that he uses as an artistic medium. As a career changer in the art world with a law degree (Bacc. Jur. Universität Hamburg), he also deals with social/societal issues in his work. Jakob Wlodarczyk's great source of inspiration is the observation of nature, which he not only pursues through purely sensual perception, but also attempts to explore theoretically. To this end, he is currently studying philosophy at the Fernuniversität Hagen, specialising in the philosophy of nature, alongside his artistic work.

Tree Tree Tree Person - Taroko Arts Residency Project IV Part 4:Kmpriyux hmtur ni maa brax mquri brah》
In early 2023, the residents of Tongli Village faced penalties from the County Tourism Office for hosting mountain travelers without proper registration, as it was deemed a violation of the Tourism Development Act. They were required to complete official registration as B&Bs before resuming their services, forcing many households to reluctantly suspend operations. In response, we launched the 2024 residency project under the theme “Kmpriyux hmtur ni maa brax mquri brah (Turning Obstacles into Strength).”
Unexpectedly, the 0403 earthquake in 2024 brought further challenges. The disaster destroyed vital mountain roads, cutting off the main routes that sustained the livelihoods of the villagers. With transportation disrupted, they lost their mountain tourism businesses, and crops like bamboo shoots and Margaret flowers could no longer be transported downhill. The six research projects participating in this year's Tree Tree Tree Person - Taroko Arts Residency (TAR) Project were also adjusted to focus on the lower valley community instead.
This year’s sharing and exhibition venue is unique—it will be held at the Gere Wenchuan Rattan Weaving Studio in Fushi Village, Taroko, Hualien. This space serves as both a rattan weaving workshop run by artisan Dumun and a breakfast café owned by Mergun, as well as a popular gathering spot for the community. We sincerely invite you to visit Fushi Village in Taroko, Hualien, and encourage you to message us to book a community tour. Even outside of the exhibition hours, the area offers many cultural and historical sites, making it perfect for a two-day, one-night trip!
