Artist Ohsumi Hideo Ohsumi Hideo
Hideo Osumi was born in Sendai, Japan, in 1955. He graduated from the Department of Crafts at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1980 and completed the Master’s Program at the Graduate School of Tokyo University of the Arts in 1982.
Osumi has long explored the textures and expressive possibilities of various metals, including steel, iron, stainless steel, copper, brass, aluminum, and titanium. Through these materials, he seeks the image of an “inner wind,” allowing solid metals to reveal a sense of lightness, movement, and life through the presence of wind and time.
A key concept in his practice can be understood through the Japanese word KAZEMAKASE, meaning “to go with the wind” or “to let oneself be carried by the wind.” It also carries a sense of surrendering to nature and allowing things to unfold as they may. When viewing Osumi’s works, one must wait for the wind to arrive. As a fitting breeze passes through, the work slowly moves back and forth. This process of waiting, observing, and sensing the passage of time is one of the essential pleasures of encountering Osumi’s sculptures.
Another important Japanese concept is MA, which refers to the space created by movement, the time in which the wind begins to blow, and a state of inner calm. Osumi’s kinetic sculptures may be understood as expressions rooted in the Japanese culture, climate, and way of perceiving life shaped by MA. At the long-awaited moment when the wind passes through the work, life seems to be breathed into it. It is in that instant that his distinctive and beautiful moving sculptures truly come into being.
Through the gentle movement of his kinetic works, viewers are invited to experience the expressive presence of the “inner wind,” and the dynamic art generated through wind, time, and metal.
