Bu mendil, The Manchester Guardian gazetesinin 7 Ağustos 1914 tarihli sayısının 7. sayfasında tam sayfa yayımlanan elle çizilmiş siyah beyaz bir Avrupa haritasının pamuklu kumaş üzerine tıpkıbasımıyla üretilmiş ve gazetenin izniyle dağıtılmış bir hatıra ve propaganda eşyası. Haritanın gazetede yayınlanmasının ve ardından mendile basılıp dağıtılmasının nedeni, Avusturya’nın Ağustos 1914 başında Sırbistan’a saldırmasıyla Doğu Cephesi’nin açılması. Dolayısıyla henüz haftası dolmadan savaşın kıta geneline yayılımı bu haritayla kayıt altına alınmış ve 1914 yazında bağımsız durumdaki ülkelerin dört yıl sonra değişecek sınırları keskin çizgilerle belirlenmiş.

The cotton handkerchief is printed with a facsimile of a hand-drawn black-and-white map of Europe published on page 7 of The Manchester Guardian on 7 August 1914. The handkerchief was produced and distributed with the newspaper’s permission as a souvenir and vehicle of propaganda. The reason for the map’s publication in the newspaper and subsequent reprinting on the handkerchief was the opening of the Eastern Front after Austria attacked Serbia at the beginning of August 1914. The map records the spread of the war across Europe even before the First World War had completed its first week. The borders of the independent countries marked on the map in the summer of 1914 were to change radically four years later.

This handkerchief, printed by the British to commemorate the naval battles at Gallipoli, features blue, white and red stripes like those on the United Kingdom’s flag. Between them, in each corner, are anchors framed by rope motifs. A map of the Ottoman Empire fills the central field, showing the Black Sea, the Balkans, the Eastern Mediterranean and part of Eastern Europe. In the lower right corner is a second map showing the Dardanelles.

Many handkerchiefs were produced in commemoration of the new sultan Mehmed V Reşad (r. 1909–1918) during the Second Constitutional Period. One of these is a red silk handkerchief decorated with a crescent-and star motif inside a large crescent in each corner and a narrow border consisting of crescent and-star motifs and stars flanking each of the constitutional mottos: ‘Liberty’ at the top, ‘Equality’ on the right, ‘Justice’ on the left, and ‘Fraternity’ at the bottom. In the centre of the handkerchief is a portrait of Sultan Mehmed V Reşad, surmounted by the legend ‘His Majesty Sultan Mehmed Han the Fifth’ and the inscription ‘Long Live the Sultan’ below.

İkinci Meşrutiyet’in ilân edildiği 1908’de Meclis-i Mebûsan’ın tekrar faaliyetlerine başlaması Sultan II. Abdülhamid’in saltanatında gerçekleşti.

The proclamation of the Second Constitution and reopening of parliament took place in 1908, towards the end of Sultan Abdülhamid II’s reign. Growing support for constitutional monarchy within the army, uprisings and the proclamation of a constitution in various towns and cities in Rumelia on 23 July 1908 obliged Sultan Abdülhamid to lend official recognition to this state of affairs on the ground. That evening, he issued a royal edict announcing the reinstatement of the Constitution and the reconvening of parliament. Known as the Second Constitutional Period, the new order was enthusiastically received by the public. A series of new newspapers and societies were established, marches and songs were composed in honour of the Constitution, postcards, posters and souvenirs were produced, and banquets and festivities were organised. Commemorative handkerchiefs again featured prominently among souvenirs marking the event and were produced in scores of different designs.

The handkerchief is printed with the portraits of five significant figures involved in the struggle for constitutional government. At the top is a crescent-and-star motif and in the centre, a portrait of Midhat Pasha, with the name ‘Midhat Pasha’ in both Ottoman Turkish and French. In the upper right corner is the portrait of Namık Kemal and the name ‘Kemal Bey’, in the upper left corner that of parliamentary speaker Ahmed Rıza Bey, in the lower right corner that of Niyazi of Resen, and in lower left corner that of Enver Bey.
One of these figures, Ahmed Rıza Bey, was a leading member of the Committee of Union and Progress and the person who gave the party its name. He lived in Paris for many years and actively participated in the struggle for constitutional government. He returned to Istanbul shortly after the new regime was established.
