24th Biennale of Sydney: Ten Thousand Suns (2024), Lahore Biennale 03 (2024), That I Could Fear a Door (2024) ณ Museo della Scultura Contemporanea Matera ประเทศอิตาลี และ TarraWarra Biennial (2023)
__________
SAC Residency is pleased to welcome Elyas Alavi, a Hazara-Australian visual artist and a 2026 Debra Porch Award resident.
During his six-week residency in Bangkok, Alavi will develop a project exploring the artistic, historical and cultural connections between Thailand and Afghanistan, with a particular focus on the relationship between Thai mural painting, Afghan-Persian miniature traditions and the Buddhist heritage of Bamiyan, a place of profound significance to Hazara history and memory.
The project grew out of Alavi’s previous visit to Bangkok, where he encountered traces and connections that led him back to the history and cultural heritage of his birthplace. From Buddhist objects associated with Bamiyan to visual resonances between Thai mural painting and Persian miniature traditions, these encounters became a starting point for considering how images, beliefs and cultures have travelled between different parts of Asia.
During the residency, Alavi will continue his research through Bangkok’s artistic and cultural heritage, alongside exchanges with people across the local art community. Through this process, he will explore connections between cultures shaped by histories of movement and memory, developing the research into a new body of work spanning painting, installation and poetry.
Elyas Alavi is a Hazara-Australian multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses painting, installation, poetry and performance. His work explores the intersections of identity, displacement, memory, gender and sexuality. His work has been presented in major international exhibitions, including the 24th Biennale of Sydney: Ten Thousand Suns (2024), Lahore Biennale 03 (2024), That I Could Fear a Door (2024) at Museo della Scultura Contemporanea Matera, Italy, and the TarraWarra Biennial (2023).
This residency marks a period of research and creative development in which stories from Bamiyan and Bangkok, together with memories and cultural histories from different places, can meet and take shape as new conversations through Alavi’s practice.
