Buffalo Slit Drum

It looks like a carved wooden buffalo, but it’s actually a drum.

Made from a single piece of wood and hollowed out inside, slit drums like this were traditionally used in Central Africa for music, dancing, and communication. The opening is carved in a way that allows different tones to be made depending on where it’s struck — some sounds could even be used to imitate spoken language.

A beautiful example of an object that works as both sculpture and instrument, with the marks of its past use still visible.

Length: 68 cm
