And what helps a local creative community grow into a lasting, sustainable ecosystem? Join us to explore these questions through the experience of Asma Sentira, on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 6:00 PM.

Drawing on years of work connecting art and cultural networks in Bangkok, alongside her ongoing work in Satun, Asma Sentira reflects on the role of art management in building relationships between people, communities, institutions, and sources of funding and resources. This draws on projects such as Galleries' Nights Bangkok, Satun in My Mind, Satun Folk & Fine (สตูล 'ปลา'ณีต) at Pakk Taii Design Week, and Satun Creative Fest.

The talk brings these experiences into a broader conversation around art, community, public funding, and the creative economy, considering how local cultural projects and initiatives can grow into a more connected, sustainable ecosystem. It also looks at the challenge of accessing public support, at a time when cultural resources and budgets remain largely centralized.

What can art reveal about the histories, politics, and social forces that shape the world around us?

Join us on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, from 6 - 8 PM for an in-depth conversation with artists Anthony Chin and Taiki Sakpisit, curator Sam I-shan, and guest interlocutor Professor Emeritus Thongchai Winichakul.

The works in “Spirits Melt to Flesh” explore hidden histories and undercurrents of the region, including legacies of colonialism and world war, intersections of myth, nationalism and spirituality, and alternative forms of intelligence. By reframing reality, all eight artists draw attention to systems of power and personal stories that may be concealed or ignored. This conversation invites us to look at these intersections between art and society, through the lens of the exhibition.

Prof. Thongchai Winichakul joins the discussion to bring a historical and political perspective to the exhibition’s exploration of the region. His influential book “Siam Mapped” is a point of departure for Anthony Chin’s eponymous three-part installation which considers how cartography has shaped Thailand’s national consciousness and understanding of geographical existence. These perspectives open up questions around history, borders, nationalism, and authority that resonate across the exhibition.

Taking place on a Tuesday when Bangkok Kunsthalle is normally closed, doors will open at 5 PM, giving registered participants the opportunity to spend time with “Spirits Melt to Flesh” before the talk begins. The exhibition will be the only one on view that evening.

Bangkok Kunsthalle invites you to a screening of “Shoplifters” on Sunday, 27 September 2026, at 5:30 PM, as part of the “Sunday Cinema” program, presented every two weeks throughout 2026.

Can love exist outside the boundaries of family? When an unconventional household takes in a young girl with nowhere else to go, their quiet life is transformed in unexpected ways. Winner of the Palme d'Or, Shoplifters is a tender and deeply human portrait of care, survival, and belonging.

The film has a runtime of 121 minutes and will be screened in its original language with Thai and English subtitles.

Important: Walk-in visitors are welcome. Walk-in registration will be available from 5 PM onwards. Any seats that remain unclaimed by their reservation holders will be released to additional walk-in visitors 10 minutes before the screening begins.

On Tuesday, 22 September 2026, from 8 - 10 PM, join us for a special after-hours conversation with Taiki Sakpisit, Daniel Hui, and curator Sam I-shan.

Taking place when Bangkok Kunsthalle is usually closed, this masterclass-style session offers a rare opportunity to enter the space at night and experience “Spirits Melt to Flesh” after hours. Starting from the spectral and otherworldly elements shared by their respective artworks, Taiki Sakpisit and Daniel Hui will discuss the development of “Maelstrom”, “Cachectic Patient” and “Funeral Rites” for the exhibition in collaboration with Sam I-shan.

This candid conversation will also cover the artists’ film and art practices, and the processes of art commissioning and exhibition-making. Participants are invited to experience the tangible and intangible elements of the exhibition in a different setting.

For this special one-night opening, only “Spirits Melt to Flesh” will be accessible during the event.

As a prelude to their upcoming exhibition, Braty invites you to join a weekend workshop taking shape through conversations, drawings, and moving images on 26 - 27 September 2026 at Bangkok Kunsthalle.

This program is part of Braty’s upcoming exhibition under our “Open Ground” program. The workshop takes place in their makeshift darkroom, a former restroom soon to be demolished, where participants are invited to engage with disappearance, traces, and memories in real time.

Across the two days, different forms of making become different forms of remembering. 16mm film becomes a material through which the building can be recorded, distorted, and transformed. Conversation offers a way to think about how memories are formed and forgotten. Observation becomes a way of reading the building, while drawing becomes a way of translating memories into fragile images.

The two-day program brings together different sessions of making and thinking, conducted in Thai or English. Please see the schedule for details. The first day features a 16mm processing workshop with limited places and a participation fee of 400 baht, while the second day is free to participate.

Bangkok Kunsthalle, in collaboration with YMKY, Japan, is pleased to announce Sukanjana Kanjanabat as the selected artist for the Bangkok Kunsthalle x Seishodo THE ROOM Artist Residency Programme 2026.

The open call invited Thai artists whose practices are rooted in craftsmanship, material knowledge, and hand-made production, spanning both traditional techniques and contemporary approaches to craft.

Selected from this year’s applicants, Sukanjana Kanjanabat will undertake a two-month residency at Seishodo THE ROOM in Kyoto, Japan, where she will have the opportunity to develop her practice through research, making, and engagement with Kyoto’s rich culture of craftsmanship and material knowledge.

Sukanjana’s artistic world combines extraordinary technical skill and a profound understanding of materials with a distinctly contemporary aesthetic. Her practice draws upon the knowledge and precision of traditional craftsmanship while pushing it into unexpected territories, challenging the boundaries between historical legacy and contemporary expression, inherited techniques and futuristic forms of making. This dialogue between past and future makes her practice particularly resonant within the context of Kyoto, where centuries-old traditions of craftsmanship continue to evolve through experimentation and innovation.

We would like to thank everyone who applied and shared their work with us, and we look forward to following Sukanjana Kanjanabat’s residency and the work that emerges from her time in Kyoto.

Experience moving image works by artists Arisa Purkpong, Kay Zhang, and Vanessa Bosch in our screening room, presented as part of the exhibition "Mooring," on Sunday 6 September 2026 from 5:30 PM onwards.

“Mooring” is the inaugural program of “Open Ground”, a platform that supports experimental artistic practices and fosters the potential of emerging Thai artists and curators. The program welcomes art projects across all forms, disciplines, and mediums. The exhibition is supported by the Office of Contemporary Art Norway, Pro-Helvetia Swiss Art Council, Ghost Foundation, OPENFIELD, and Bangkok Kunsthalle.

ขอเชิญรับชมผลงานภาพเคลื่อนไหวโดยศิลปิน อาริสา เผือกผ่อง, เคย์ จาง, และวนิสสา บอช จากนิทรรศการ “Mooring” ในห้องฉายภาพยนตร์ของเรา ในวันอาทิตย์ที่ 6 กันยายน 2569 เวลา 17:30 น.

ผลงานเหล่านี้เมื่ออยู่ในพื้นที่นิทรรศการ ต่างถูกจัดแสดงในลักษณะของงานศิลปะจัดวาง ร่วมกับองค์ประกอบเฉพาะอื่น ๆ การฉายผลงานครั้งพิเศษนี้จึงเปิดโอกาสให้ผู้ชมได้สัมผัสผลงานผ่านภาพและเสียงที่คมชัด และเข้าถึงประสบการณ์ทางภาพยนตร์ได้อย่างเต็มที่ โดยทุกท่านสามารถเข้าร่วมได้โดยไม่ต้องลงทะเบียนล่วงหน้า
