Owned by Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry and gazetted as a national monument in October 1994, Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall sheds light on the lesser-known details of Singapore and Nanyang’s involvement in the 1911 Revolution. Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall (SYSNMH), a heritage institution owned by Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry and managed by the National

Heritage Board, traces Dr. Sun's revolutionary activities in the Southeast Asian region and highlights the impact of the 1911 Revolution on Singapore as well as Singapore's contributions to the Revolution. The refreshed Memorial Hall features a new storyline and galleries which introduce key community leaders in the early 20th Century; highlights Nanyang as a base for Revolution; and explores the impact and influences of the 1911 Revolution on the Singapore Chinese community.

Qixi, observed on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, is best known for the tale of the Cowherd and Weaver Girl. Traditionally, women also prayed to the Weaver Girl for wisdom and skilled hands, giving the festival its other name, Qiqiaojie, or the Festival of Praying for Nimbleness.

On this day, women would showcase and test their skills by creating elaborate crafts and other handmade objects, an important part of the celebrations.

This black-and-white photograph from our collection captures one such celebration, with an elaborate craft display at its centre.
