ГSingapore Pioneer Artists Exhibition」— Lee Man Fong: Between Presence and Atmosphere

Some paintings speak through detail. Others speak through mood. Lee Man Fong does both.

Shaped by a trans-regional life and multiple cultural encounters, Lee Man Fong developed his visual language by transforming lived experience into form, rhythm, and atmosphere.

In this pairing, The Weaver (P3) and Scenic Soochow (P4) reveal two distinct registers in his practice. The Weaver draws attention to human gesture and quiet concentration. Scenic Soochow unfolds through layered space and mist-like tonal transitions, where landscape is felt as poetic memory.

Together, they show an artist attuned to communication across cultures, geographies, and time, leaving us with not only what is seen, but what is felt.

Г𝐒𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐏𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐄𝐱𝐡𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧」
— Chen Chong Swee: Grounded Vision, Living Brushwork

What happens when a deeply trained brush-and-ink tradition meets the textures of everyday life in Southeast Asia?

In Chen Chong Swee’s works, that encounter feels immediate and quietly powerful. In works such as Nanyang Village, Beach Scene, and Combing Hair, he translates lived experience through brushwork. Disciplined Chinese brushwork enters local settings with an acute concern for reality: kampong life, tropical landscapes, and ordinary moments shaped by close looking.

What emerges is a compelling form of cultural awareness:
grounded in tradition, yet fully alive to local life.

ГSingapore Pioneer Artists Exhibition」

Chinese brushwork did not disappear with the arrival of Western modernism. It took on new forms.

In Herons (P3), Chen Wen Hsi combines traditional finger-painting techniques with abstract compositional structures influenced by Western modernism. Six herons are arranged from distant to near, creating a strong sense of spatial depth through an open and fluid composition.

Foreground figures remain tactile and defined, while those in the background dissolve into abstract, arc-like shapes. As viewers move closer, clarity gradually gives way to abstraction, revealing how ink traditions and modern structures are brought into dialogue across the exhibition.

Step into the exhibition and witness the meeting of tradition and modernity through ink.

ГSingapore Pioneer Artists Exhibition」— now on view at MOCA@Singapore

Chinese ink brushwork did not disappear but transformed when these artists encountered Western modernism. Each artist developed a distinct visual language that grounded in traditional techniques while engaging with Western artistic thought.

In Long House Inhabitants (P4, P5), Cheong Soo Pieng draws on the disciplined lines of Chinese Gongbi (工笔) Ink painting while working on canvas, a material more closely associated with Western art. The work reflects a human-nature philosophy of living, inspired by his long engagement with the indigenous communities of Sarawak.

Step into the exhibition to explore further how ink traditions and modern forms intersect and evolve across different artistic practices.

ГSingapore Pioneer Artists Exhibition」| Rethinking “Pioneer Artists”

When we speak of “pioneer artists” in Singapore, the term is often assumed to describe a single, clearly defined school. Yet Singapore’s art history tells a more complex story. “Nanyang School” was never bound by a unified style, and the idea of the “pioneer” itself only took shape retrospectively.

Shaped by immigrant history, Singapore’s artistic formation in the mid-twentieth century emerged through the practices and exchanges of Chinese, Malay, Indian, Islamic, and other cultural communities. Early artistic activity emerged through overlapping experiments, encounters, and adaptations across cultures.

Singapore Pioneer Artists Exhibition approaches the “Pioneer Artist” as an open historical position rather than a fixed label. It invites us to consider how early modern practices continue to shape contemporary artistic thinking today.

✨Opening day event recap
ГSingapore Pioneer Artists Exhibition」

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening day — from the thoughtful speeches by Mr. Foo Cexiang, Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar, and founder of MOCA@Singapore Ms. Linda Ma; to the ribbon-cutting ceremony that marked the official opening of the exhibition. It was a pleasure to see the space come alive through shared conversations and the energy of those who moved through the works together.

With guided tours led by the curatorial team, the opening offered a meaningful beginning to a journey shaped by many voices and encounters. From early artistic experiments to ideas that continue to resonate today, Singapore Pioneer Artists Exhibition invites everyone to look again at how Singapore’s artistic foundations were formed — through movement, experimentation, and multiple cultural perspectives.

The final brushstroke has been laid. 「As She Paints: In Memory of Chen Cheng Mei」comes to a close, we extend our deepest gratitude to all who walked through her world with us.

Chen leaves behind a powerful counter-narrative: that an artist’s strength can be rooted in inner wholeness and a conscious embrace of joy.

This entire exhibition has been an inquiry into one central question: not what she painted, but who she was, and how her inner world came to define her art.

The answer was always in her work. Her unique soul, her optimism, courage, and empathy, is not just a backdrop to her art; it is its very substance, immortalized in her distinctive visual language. It is a world preserved, forever, as she paints.
