The Gallery has been recognised at the Silver Ribbon (Singapore) Mental Health Awards for the fourth consecutive year for our work supporting youth mental wellness through Strength Through Art (stART)!

With World Mental Health Day taking place two weekends ago, we’re reflecting on the belief behind this work: art can offer young people a space to express themselves, connect with others and navigate difficult moments 💛🎨

Since 2023, stART has grown from working with schools to reaching youths not in education, employment or training (NEET). This year’s award recognises our work with youth outpatients, using creative engagement to support their recovery and well-being.

As a People’s Museum, we want to keep listening to and responding to the different needs of the communities we serve 🤝 We’re grateful to our partners for helping us bring stART to more young people, and we look forward to continuing this work together.

A Slow Saturday at the Gallery 🌿✨

From mindful making and outdoor yoga, to panel discussions and quiet moments in our calming spaces, there were plenty of ways to slow down, get creative, and take a moment for yourself. Families also joined us for art-filled activities designed for the little ones to explore, play, and discover.

What does it mean to bloom through art? 🌱

For students from Assumption Pathway School (APS), the answer took shape through artworks of their own.

Throughout September, the Gallery’s Imagination Gallery and Concourse Gallery have been home to Bloom, APS’ eighth annual student art exhibition with National Gallery Singapore. Drawing inspiration from works in our collection, students responded with their own interpretations – transforming what they encountered at the Gallery into expressions of their individual experiences, ideas and imaginations 💡

This past Wednesday, we had the joy of welcoming over 70 APS students to the Gallery for an Appreciation Ceremony graced by Guest of Honour Ms Jane Ittogi. It was a fitting culmination of a month-long showcase centred on growth and on how art can give young people the space to express themselves, build confidence and discover their own creative voices.

For eight years, we have had the privilege of hosting APS’ annual student art exhibition and seeing how its students make art their own. As a People’s Museum, this is what we hope the Gallery can be: a place where everyone can encounter art, see something of themselves in it, and discover new possibilities through it 😊

What you’re listening to is a music composition by the The TENG Company , capturing the unhurried world and quiet ease of Khoo Sui Hoe’s "Sunbathing on Quilts".

This piece is one of four original compositions inspired by an artwork on display in our long-term exhibition "Singapore Stories: Pathways and Detours in Art". Bringing together musical traditions from Singapore and Southeast Asia, the series invites us to connect with art through sound and find moments of calm. Who was Lai Foong Moi? 👀🎨

Born in Malaya, Lai Foong Moi trained in Singapore and France before returning to a rapidly changing Singapore in the late 1950s. Through her paintings of women, labourers and the city, she captured everyday life during a time of change 🌆

She was also the first Malayan-born woman to hold solo exhibitions in Singapore and Malaya. Now, her work is back in the spotlight with a focused exhibition "Lai Foong Moi: Crossings", currently open at the Gallery.

After more than a decade with National Gallery Singapore, Dr Eugene Tan, our Chief Executive Officer and Director, will step down from his role at the end of this year to focus fully on leading Singapore Art Museum from 1 January 2027.

Eugene has been part of the Gallery’s journey since 2013 and has played an important role in shaping the institution we are today. As he continues to lead the Gallery through the end of the year, we are grateful for his leadership and look forward to celebrating his contributions more fully in the months ahead.

As the Gallery prepares for its next chapter, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Chng Hak-Peng as our next Chief Executive Officer, with effect from 1 January 2027.

Hak-Peng brings more than three decades of leadership experience across the arts, public and private sectors. He previously served as Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Symphony Group and has a longstanding commitment to museums and the cultural sector, including as a volunteer docent at two local museums.

Hak-Peng will join the Gallery as CEO-Designate on 1 October 2026, working closely with Eugene over the next three months to ensure a smooth transition.

We look forward to welcoming Hak-Peng and working with him to build on the strong foundations of the Gallery’s first decade, as we continue to champion Singapore and Southeast Asian art and artists.
